Among the early settlers around Edgefield was the Sanders
McMahan family whose forebears came from Ireland before the middle
of the 18th century. The immigrant, Redman McMahan, who likely was
ccompanied by several brothers, appears to be the Redmond, a soldier
in charge of Samuel Perry in the Province of Pennsylvania in 1746.
Between that date and 1777 he had made his way down the
Shenandoah Valley to Christianburg, Montgomery County, Virginia,
where he took the Oath of Fidelity to the revolting colonists cause. One
Redmond Memayhand is on the tax list of Elk Creek District,
Montgomery County, Virginia, in 1782. In his application in 1834 for a
pension for service in the Revolutionary War Redmond stated he
enlisted in Craven District, South Carolina, in 1775. He was " 103 years'
old this past January I "; his advanced age may account for inaccuracies
in his application which was rejected - because length of service did not
meet requirements.
Redman may have been in Boone's Caravan ''from Pevnnsylvania to
North Carolina in 1750,'' stopping off in Montgomery County, Virginia, or
later returning there.
It is not known who his wife was. She apparently preceded him in
death as he stated on pension application that he lived around with his
children. It' is likely that he married more than once. His known children
are: Sanders (1784-1864) married Nancy; Jonathan born 1788, married
Rebecca Brown, remained in Warren County, Tennessee; his home fell
in Cannon County when it was formed in 1836; William (1796-1861)
married Mary Marr (1798-1852)
Sanders McMahan lived for a time in Warren County, where his first
child was born. When he came to this area he first settled in Gourdneck
Cove, near Anderson, Tennessee. He and William Ake entered 200
acres of land jointly in January of 1821. This entry is recorded in Marion
County, Tennessee, because the Big Crow Creek area was assigned to
Marion County, from 1816 to 1824 when it wasreturned to Franklin
County.
When Alabama became a state, Sanders moved his family to what
is known as McMahan's Cove and lived there until his death. He and his
wife and several of their children are buried in the family burying ground
on a cedar-topped knoll just above the spring where Benge's Creek
begins as a small branch.
Sanders was a 1st Lt. in Capt. Meredith Price's Co., Lt. Col. David
Cawlfield's Battalion, Alabama Mounted Volunteers, in the Florida War
1836-37.
Family legend has it that young Sanders fell in love with a girl named
Ann who died at an early age; in her memory he gave the name Ann to
each of his daughters.

after their marriage and moved to Caldwell County Texas, 10 miles east

Edward
McMahan, a merchant in McMahan and son of John & Minerva
McMahan. There ws also the McMahan Cemetery (sometimes referred
to as the Jeffrey Cem.) a McMahan also married a Jeffrey. 3

2 In 1872 Elder John A. Cargile wrote a book in which he stated that his
father, James C. Cargile,
and family emigrated to Missouri in 1838 ''in search of a better country,''
making the journey with
an ox team in about three months. In 1845 they returned to Alabama
and in 1849 they moved
to Crow Creek, on account of the drouth, to Longacre'.s Mill. He also
wrote, "James Cargile was
of the third generation from three Scotch-lrish brothers of our name who
came from the north of
Ireland.'' Lewis Cargile, the father of James, was a son of William
Cargile, who died in 1844-45
in Wilkes County, North Carolina, and left a will naming six of his
children:
Lewis;
Jason (also came to this area, but left before 1840);
Rebecca;
Elizabeth Wrifiyht;
Polly Wood;
Peggy Stailey.
There were likely two more named Pleasant and Joel, who were given
inheritance before their
father died.
Elder John A. Cargile (1843-1920) was an Adventist preacher. He
travelled widely over middle
and eastern United States both to conduct revival meetings and to
debate religious issues. It
was said that he could quote from memory chapter after chapter of the
Bible. Certain of his
sermons were so profound and inspiring that he often received request
to repeat the sermons in
churches from Kansas to Maine. It was not unusual for him to go on
preaching tours lasting
three to six months, sometimes taking his family and sometimes
alone.2
