Bath Salts

Bath Salts are easy to make, and they make wonderful gifts.
Use your own choice of fragrances, and be creative. I have several variations of Bath Salts for you to glance through. Enjoy!

MAKING YOUR OWN BATH SALTS
The basic ingredients are table salt, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) & Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate). Some herbalists also use borax.
Add the salts to a large bowl in these proportions:
3 parts Epsom salts
2 parts baking soda
1 part table salt (or borax)
Essential oils (add after mixing throughly)
Mix thoroughly.
This is now the base from which you can create a wide variety of bath salts.
Its wise to add colors to bath salts. Use plain food coloring for this purpose, letting it fall drop by drop onto the salt base. If two or more colors are required to mix an exotic hue (such as purple), mix these in a spoon first and then add to the salts to avoid creating a two-toned product, unless of course, you plan on a two or three tone salt. Add many drops for a darker colored salt; fewer for a lightly hued salt.
Mix the color into the salts until it is evenly distributed.
Now add the essential oils drop by drop, one ingredient at a time, until the scent seems right.
Using your hands and fingertips, mix it until all salt particles are moistened. This may take up to fifteen minutes or longer.
As to proportions, rely on your nose to determine the exact quanties. The more potent the finished products' scent, the less will have to be used for each bath. They should be strongly scented.
To use, add from 2 tablespoons to one-half cup of the bath salts to a full tub. Mix with your hands into the water.

TESTING OIL BLENDS
Toothpicks
Example: if you're making a blend with two parts lemongrass & one part cedarwood. Dip 1/2 of two toothpicks into the lemongrass and 1/2 of another one in the cedarwood then hold them all together to smell. You can also keep them together for a few days to see if one scent overpowers any others.

BATH SALT
1/2 c. Baking soda
1/4 c. Epsom salts
2 drops orange food coloring, (or 1 drop red food coloring and 1 drop yellow food coloring) Combine all ingredients in a bowl and stir until color is evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
Transfer the mixture into a food processor and grind into a fine powder.
Spoon into a bottle or jar.

BATH SALTS
1cup Epsom salts
1cup coarse salt
10-20 drops green food coloring
6 drops eucalyptus oil
10 drops rosemary oil
15 drops peppermint oil
Mix salts in large bowl.
In smaller bowl take 1/4-1/2 cup salt mixture and add food coloring and oils. Mix WELL.
Add back into rest of salt mixture.

BATH SALTS
2-3 cups epsom salts (or salts of your choice)
1/3 cup peppermint
1/3 cup spearmint
40 drops peppermint essential oil
20 drops eucalyptus essential oil
Grind the mints well, and then sift through a mesh kitchen strainer, and add them to the salts.
Mix in oils.
Use about 1/4 - 1/3 cup of this mixture per bath.

BATH SALTS
2 cups epson salts
1 cup sea salt
1/2 cup baking soda
1/2 teaspoon glycerine
food coloring
10 - 12 drops essential oils
Mix the salts and baking soda.
Add the glycerine and food coloring.
You may have to "mash" the coloring and glycerine against the sides of the bowl as these are liquid.
Once you have the desired color add the essential oil and stir well.
Store in an airtight container.

BATH SALTS
1/2 Cup Rock Salt
(the kind you use in your ice cream maker)
20 Drops Each Apple and Orange Fragrance Oil
1 Drop each Red, Green, Yellow and Blue
Separate salt into two bowls.
Add 10 drops of each fragrance oil to each bowl.
Separate the apple salt into two bowls and color one red and one green. Stirring color and fragrance thru the salt.
Separate the orange scented salt into two bowls and color one yellow and one blue. Stir until well blended.
You can put the salt in lidded containers and shake well (but not too hard) to distribute the color and fragrance.
Spread the salt out on wax paper and allow to dry completely.
Layer in a glass jar.

BATH SALTS
1/4 cup Epsom Salts
1/8 cup baking soda
1/8 cup sea salt
10 drops essential oil
Measure all the salts into a bowl and blend them together thoroughly.
Add five drops of essential oil that you enjoy and blend it in well, then add five more drops and blend.
Package in an airtight container and label.
To use, Add 1/4 - 1/2 cup to bath water.
Variations:
Use different essential oils to vary the aromatherapy properties.
Try lavender, rosemary, sandalwood, eucalyptus or any citrus oil.
If you do not have all of the salts in the recipe, any of them can be used individually.
Some of the minerals in the salts do have therapeutic functions. For example, Epson salts is magnesium sulfate which draws out toxic substances and relieves aching muscles.
