DM9: Family Ties

It seems to me that families have very strong emotional bonds between members. Sometimes these bonds are enough to cause members of the family to do things that they would not normally do. This is a story of one such situation. Let me begin by introduceing the key players.

Charlie had a cousin who works at Hy-Vee. Her name is Emily. Emily started out as a bagger. She sacked groceries and worked her way up. The last anyone knew, she was working the service desk in the frount of the store. Emily is not a very large lady, but she has been lifting weights for a while now. Her goal seems to be to become one of those crazy female body builders. This dream has earned her the nickname of "Body Builder". Basically Emily is an average young woman. Normally she isn't overly aggressive or intimidating. However, if she gets pushed enough even she can become a killer.

Killers can exist in anyone's family. Russ also had a cousin who worked at Hy-Vee. Rory was his name and the kitchen is where he worked. Rory is a very tall man. He is the kind of guy that you would want to pick on. He has one of those dumb looks but on the inside he's a great person. Rory can be very intimidating simply because of his size.

Now I'd like to tell you a bit about the situations leading up to this sad event. Work is a place that can often stress a person to their breaking point. Hy-Vee is a work place filled with stress. Therefore it is often only a matter of time before the workers there lose control. The time it takes to lose control depends on the person and their job. The two people I just told you about both deal with customers a great deal, which is extreamly stressfull.

The day was a fairly normal one at first. Both Rory and Emily had to work that day. Late in the morning a few clounds rolled in and it started to rain. It was a Monday so the store was fairly slow and with the rain falling now the store was almost completely empty. Boredom had got the better of most emploees who tried to busy themselves by filling aisles and walking around the store.

Around one o'clock Emily decided to take her hour break. Because of the rain she decided that it would be best to eat at work. Emily went upstair, punched out, and came back downstairs. She headed straight for the kitchen to get herself something to eat. In the kitchen Rory was the only person who hadn't gone out into the eating area to watch T.V. As Emily walked up to the case Rory stepped forward and asked,

"What can I get for you?"

Emily thought for a moment, then started to give her order.

"I'll have the...um, wait. I think I'll take the, um... I want some..."

Everytime Emily chose the dish she wanted she saw something else that looked better. Rory was used to this. Nearly everyday there is a customer who can't make up their mind as to what they want. Emily's indecisivness didn't bother him at all.

After twenty-five minutes Emily had finally made her order. Thankfully there were no other cusomers waiting behind her. Rory turned around and got a plate to put her food on. Rory then opened the hot case up and put the food on her plate. He then stepped down to the next case and prepared to get her side dishes.

"What would you like for your sides?" he asked.

"Oh, I know, I want some...Ohh, that looks nice. I want some of that. Wait, no, I want some..."

Again Emily could not make up her mind. That was the final straw.

Rory took the plate he had in his hands and threw it into the case so hard that the plate shattered. Then he suddenly reached over the counter and grabbed Emily.

"Make up you mind!" he yelled as he pulled her over the top of the case.
