Almost all of the CD's in this list are compiled and originated by me: The Alarm - OUT OF THE CUPBOARD AND INTO THE REAL WORLD Originally compiled only for the Alarm internet mailing list as a full CD with artwork & liner notes. Those are all gone now, but I can make CD-R copies. The CD compiles together many demos and extremely rare tracks from all phases of the Alarm's career. Sound quality is so-so in places due to the age of some of the sources, but the rarity of the material makes this and important compilation. The Alarm - Abbey Road Studios on 26 Nov. 1983 Listen to the Alarm recording "Second Generation" and "Declaration" during the DECLARATION album sessions. For die-hard fans only. This is a somewhat repetitious document of how boring it can be in a studio sometimes. Mike and Nigel try many guitar-voice-drum takes on "Second Generation", interspersed with running commentary from all the band members. The Alarm - RADIO FREE ALARM Vol. 1 (Cleveland, 04 April 1984) 11-track live concert. Awesome sound - taken from a cassette copy of the radio station's master reel-to-reel tape. Much better than even an FM tape. The Alarm - RADIO FREE ALARM Vol. 2 (several sources '83-'84) 10 tracks live at the Apollo in Glasgow (06 Feb. 1983): - 1st gen. LP copy of Westwood One "In Concert show #84-25" 4 tracks live at Alabmahalle in Munich (04 June 1984): - taken from vinyl bootleg of German TV broadcast 4 tracks live at Roskilde Festival, Germany (30 June 1984): - taken from vinyl bootleg of German radio broadcast The Alarm - LIVE AT LORELEI ROCK (25 Aug. 1984) 16 track TV/radio concert. Transferred to CD from a master tape copy of a very clean 2LP bootleg. The Alarm - LIVE IN HAMBURG, GERMANY (27 Feb. 1990) 14-track radio concert from the CHANGE world tour. This is the only FM radio tape to have surfaced from that tour which was cut short due to bandmember family illnesses. Fabulous extended versions of many CHANGE tracks! Transferred to CD from a 2nd gen. analog tape. The Alarm - Alarm.CHANGE.demos (2 CD's) 16 acoustic tracks from a 1988 L.A. demo session w/ Mike and Eddie AND 20+ electric tracks with the full band at the '88-'89 Kinmell Hall demo sessions in Wales. Excellent quality, with just a couple digital quirks from a bad source CD. The Alarm (see also Mike Peters and Dave Sharp listings) An Emotional Fish - B-SIDE COLLECTION Atlantic Records tried very hard to promote this Irish band's first album in 1990. They released a couple CD-singles with non-album tracks, sent out a couple promo CD's with exclusive mixes, and even sent out a promo-only collection called LIVE BAIT which had some very cool live tracks. Toss in a couple Holland radio session tracks and you've got 64 minutes worth of music - and all direct from the original CD sources. Bodeans - WXRT ChicagoFest live broadcast on July 4th, 1989 Source is my original analog FM master tape. Beautiful sound, with just a single spot that has some slight FM static. 17-track setlist all fits onto a 74-min. CD-R with no edits! Encore includes a cover of Chuck Berry's "Rock and Roll Music". Bowery Boys - GEORGE JONES vs. GODZILLA (plus various artist bonus tracks) 50-min. worth of college-rock fun from Champaign-Urbana, IL in 1988! The guitarist from Bowery Boys later joined Titanic Love Affair. Bonus tracks are from a locally-released various artists tape of the same scene as the Bowery Boys. Artists include early Poster Children, Titanic Love Affair (w/ Jay Bennett, now with Wilco), Little Engine, Earwigs, and Gidget Eats Pork Pie. Cactus World News - BACKGROUND DETAILS CHANGE All of their studio B-sides and non-album tracks collected into a single place. Includes some very rare promo-only tracks. Cactus World News - live at the Paradise in Boston (07/17/86) 73-min. concert from the URBAN BEACHES tour. CD-R was created from a 1st gen. audience tape. Clear drum and guitar sounds, with vocals and bass slightly lower in the mix. Great extended versions of "State of Emergency" and "Hurry Back". Also contains unreleased song "Remember Everything" and Simon & Garfunkel's "America". Cactus World News - live at the Melkweg in Amsterdam, Holland (10/08/86) 70-min. concert from the URBAN BEACHES tour. CD-R was created from an audience master tape and the setlist includes an unreleased song called "Remember Everything". All sounds are very clear. Definitely an above-average audience recording. Cactus World News - SPIN Magazine radio show LP (at the Whiskey in L.A.-20 Aug. 1986) I've taken all the live tracks from the SPIN radio show LP, edited out the interview segments, and added in all the other live b-sides plus the unreleased song "Remember Everything" from the Amsterdam show. Total playing time 73 min. & all tracks are from the original sources. The Call - "RECONCILED Tour - 1986" Two radio concerts on one CD! 1. Paradise Theater in Boston on June 5, 1986. (source: Westwood One IN CONCERT show #86-14, broadcast date 07/21/86) 2. WXRT Chicago FM master tape source from the same tour. (date/venue unknown) The two setlists are almost the same, but the WXRT show has more improvisation and a couple tracks not on the Boston broadcast LP's. I omitted two duplicate songs (which had sound problems anyway) from WXRT in order to fit both shows on 1-CD. Peter Case - Live at the Cactus Cafe in Austin, TX (14 May 1994) Master FM source: 60-min. mono broadcast on KUT 90.5 from the SINGS LIKE HELL tour. Bonus tracks: 3 alternate studio takes of songs from the PETER CASE LP. Clash - "THIS IS THE HOME OF THE BLUES-RIGHT?" 1st gen. FM source. Originally broadcast in 1979 from the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, WXRT re-broadcast it in 1996. 19-tracks of fury from the former "only band that matters"! Cowboy Junkies - Live at the Riviera Theatre in Chicago (July 1996) Master FM source: 60-min. WXRT broadcast. 13 tracks. note: "Murder Tonight In the Trailer Park" is faded early due to a tape flip near the end of the song. Golden Smog - "LIVE AT THE LOUNGE AX" Source is a WXRT Chicago FM analog master tape. 16-song setlist includes an offbeat Bowie cover "Five Years" and plenty of original material from the DOWN BY THE OLD MAINSTREAM album. Hiatt, John - RIOT WITH HIATT "Live Bootleg" A 48-min. live concert from 1985 originally issued to radio stations by Geffen Records to promote Hiatt's WARMING UP TO THE ICE AGE album but never released to the general public. I made the CD transfer directly from a very clean LP source. Material Issue - BOYS MAKIN' NOISE Vol. 1 Contains 23 tracks that appeared only on promo-only CD's and obscure compilations. All tracks are taken direct from the original CD sources except for the Budweiser radio ad! Material Issue - BOYS MAKIN' NOISE Vol. 2 Contains a complete 45-min. concert broadcast from the Palomino in North Hollywood, 1991 - taken direct from the original master reel-to-reel as well as more acoustic tracks from radio appearances and some choice cover tunes from tribute albums. McMurtry, James - "YOU GUYS ARE AWFUL POLITE...." Complete 73-min. electric show from the Bottom Line in NY on March 3, 1998. Taken from a 1st gen. analog audience tape. Excellent sound balance and dynamic range. McMurtry, James - LIVE AT THE CACTUS CAFE, AUSTIN, TX (10/06/91) Taken from a 2nd gen. 40-min. FM broadcast by KUT 90.5 in Austin. Acoustic show recorded prior to the release of the CANDYLAND album. Filler: 4-song 04/02/95 Columbia Records Radio Hour performance. Peters, Mike - The RISE of Mike Peters 21 tracks of acoustic radio sessions, rare live versions & covers. Transferred to CD from many analog masters and 1st gen. copies. Just a couple are from multi-gen. sources. Otis and The Elevators - CROSS THE BRIDGE My favorite band from the University of Illinois back in '85-'89. Otis and the Elevators played mostly original tunes, but they also played covers from Eric Clapton, Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead and Stevie Ray Vaughn. This CD is transferred from a well-done cassette album they released in 1989, and includes a few bonus tracks from a live cassette released the previous year. 73-min. of great blues-rock! Red Rockers - BBC Rock Hour #432 (broadcast Aug. 7, 1983) An 11-track live concert taken directly from a BBC transcription disc, plus 2 rare tracks from a 12" single: "China" (extended) and "Ball of Confusion", plus 5 selected tracks from ex-guitarist J.T. Griffith's long out of print 1988 solo album SON OF AN ENGINEER. Sharp, Dave - NAIL IT WHILE IT'S HOT (live in NY, 28 Nov. 1990) 13 mostly acoustic live tracks w/ minimal electric backing (1st gen.!) + 3 radio acoustic tracks (1st gen. source) Sharp, Dave - HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT Available as a full CD with liner notes - ask for details. I compiled this for the Alarm/Mike Peters/Dave Sharp internet mailing list. It pulls together many tracks from various sources, all as low-gen. as possible. Some acoustic tracks were taken directly from radio promo CD's for the ROCK OVER LONDON syndicated weekly show. Sharp, Dave - STUDIO REHEARSALS, SUMMER 1991 (with the Barnstormers) 16 live studio tracks with backup band The Barnstormers + 1 radio acoustic track of the unreleased song "Freedom Train". Excellent sound, slightly unbalanced due to the nature of the recording. Very little tape hiss. Shoulders - HUNGRY MAN'S DANCE Great Austin, Texas band whose debut LP went to #2 in France! (for more info, see their discography elsewhere on my webpage) Transferred to CD from their original self-released 1989 cassette. Bonus tracks include "That's Life (live)" and "Borderline Tango" from a Jo Carol Pierce tribute album. Described as "Tom Waits meets Captain Beefheart by way of U2". Smithereens - UNDERCOVER AND OBSCURE All the officially released tracks which are NOT on the band's ATTACK OF THE SMITHEREENS b-sides collection. All sources are direct from original sources except for the tracks from their first 7" EP - I had a 3rd gen. tape source for those. Son Volt - OTHER POINTS IN-BETWEEN TRACE demos, outtakes, acoustic tracks and cover versions from the TRACE tour. All are from either original CD/vinyl or very low gen. tape sources (I was a branch on a couple tape trees that originally helped distribute some of these tracks on the POSTCARD mailing list). Sweet, Matthew - CASUAL ACQUAINTANCES 21 tracks worth of radio sessions, acoustic performances, demos and non-album tracks. My own hand-made update on the much-loved GOODFRIEND CD his record label sent out to promote the GIRLFRIEND album. All sources are either the original item or 1st gen. copies. Sweet, Matthew - MARTIAN DAYDREAM 22 tracks taken from mostly the period of time of the BLUE SKY ON MARS album. All are taken directly from the original promo CD's and vinyl records, with the exception of a couple of radio acoustic tracks. Sweet's acoustic version of Nirvana's "Lithium" is hilarious. U2 - UNFORGETTABLE OUTTAKES AND TOUR RARITIES Incl. four demos from the Unforgettable Fire album sessions, as well as some rare alternate versions from extremely rare promo singles and misprints - including "Love Comes Tumbling" with totally diff. lyrics from the Australian 12" single! Also includes some rarely played live tracks and the 12 1/2 minute Live Aid version of "Bad". Sources are unknown gen., but are considerably cleaned up in some cases from what is in common trading circles. The Aussie 12" is directly from the totally clean original vinyl. Uncle Tupelo - ALL THE NON-ALBUM TRACKS Includes ALL the live tracks,b-sides, and non-album cuts that UT released commercially except for the easy-to-find "Effigy" from the NO ALTERNATIVE benefit CD. All 22 tracks on the CD are direct from the original vinyl, CD and cassette-single sources. Vulgar Boatmen - EARLY RECORDINGS 1982-1985 The complete self-released ALL BANDS ON DECK cassette, plus 5 selections from the WOMEN & BOATMEN FIRST cassette, plus a few more bonus tracks from various sources. This early release has songs that later appeared on all of their later studio albums - plus some good tracks that have not yet been released on any albums. Transferred to CD from a 3rd or 4th generation cassette. Sound quality is good, but a little "muffled" here and there. Best I could do! Westerberg, Paul - "I'VE PLAYED HERE BEFORE" 14-track live concert from Chicago, IL on July 4, 1996 - the same date and site of the last Replacements show! Transferred to CD from a 1st gen. analog FM tape. Bonus tracks include "Make Your Own Kind Of Music" from a Bob magazine flexidisc, Paul's solo Sat. Night Live appearance, and an acoustic "Love Untold" from a radio session. Westerberg, Paul - "PRETEND YOU LIKE THIS" Culled from four different acoustic and electric radio sessions played by Paul to promote the EVENTUALLY album. Includes the 99X Atlanta appearance in its entirety, and a beautiful acoustic version of "Skyway". Whiskeytown - "Idiot's Delight" radio show & IN YOUR WILDEST DREAMS promo CD Mastered from excellent 1st gen. FM tape & promo CD sources. complete 10-song live studio performance on Vin Scelsa's "Idiot's Delight" radio show on WNEW (New York) from 19 Oct. 1997. Whiskeytown - "NyaR Say Bad About DOOM DOOF" (Seattle Bumbershoot Festival, 06 Sept. 1998) The good news: 74-min. long and mastered from a 1st gen. audience tape. More good news: the setlist is about 80% new material. HOWEVER, a couple tracks' intros are cut on the source tape and I had to boost the treble/mid-range A LOT to balance the sound. I'd rate this recording as a 7 on a 10 scale. (It's definitely fun to hear, just don't expect FM quality.) Wire Train - B-sides, Rarities and Remixes Collection 13-tracks including 5 remixes, some from promo-only singles. Some tracks are available on their officially released retrospective, but I wanted to get all of this into a single place.
