Though this wasn't released until after ther major-label debut album POP SAID, I have listed it first because of the material it contains. 1988 Title: POP SAID Label: CBS/Columbia Serial Numbers LP: 462894 1 CD: CK 45208 Cassette: ??? unknown TRACKLISTING: 1. Recorded at The Greenhouse in London August/September 1988 COMMENTS: Following a string of successful indy singles on their own Native Records label (see "singles" section), the DBuds signed with CBS. POP SAID contains several remakes of songs from those early days. If you like fuzzbox guitar and simple, fast melodies then this is a great album! 1990 Title: CRAWDADDY Label: CBS/Columbia - Released on 02 October 1990 Serial Numbers LP: ??? unknown CD: CK 46816 Cassette: ??? unknown promo cassette: 46816 TRACKLISTING: 1. Recorded at Greenhouse Studios, the Justice Rooms, the Windings and Great Linford Manor - and mixed at Maison Rouge. Engineering done by Jessica, Giles, Stephen Street, Peter, Stuart and Tao. Strings on "So Close" by David Cross (courtesy of Red Hot Records) COMMENTS: On CRAWDADDY, they ditched the fuzzbox guitar power-pop approach and came up with a much more polished and complex sound. And it worked! This is a great album even though it doesn't necessarily sound too much like POP SAID. The promo cassette of the album comes with a unique black and white photo on the front and a nice note from the producer: "The Buds conjure up a great combination of stylish pop and psychedelic feedback. The new rhythm section is particularly powerful now - just checkout "It Makes No Difference". It's all hard guitars but yet still good girly pop! They manage to be dirty but sexy and sleek, all at the same time! Wonderful! Andrea and Harley are destined to become the Chris Stein and Debbie (or is it Deborah these days?) Harry of the 1990's! All this and they are some of the nicest people I have ever met. You can't ask for more than that can you?" - Stephen Street (06/25/90) 1992 Title: EROTICA Label: CHAOS/Sony/Columbia Serial Numbers LP: ??? unknown CD: OK 52913 promocassette: AOC 52913 TRACKLISTING: 1. One Thing Leads To Another 6. Angels Fallen 2. Sure Thing 7. Isolation 3. Off My Mind 8. Long Day In the Universe 4. Gently Fall 9. Wave 5. Please Yourself 10. If Produced by Stephen Street and assisted by David Snell, except #3 and #10 produced by the Darling Buds and engineered by Jessica Corcoran. Mixed by Stephen Street. Recorded at Surrey Sound in Leatherhead, except #3 and #10 at the Greenhouse in London. COMMENTS: This came out just a month or two before Madonna's album EROTICA! The band share the songwriting duties for the first time. Previously, the guitarist and singer had done all the writing, but now various songs had different amounts of collaboration between all band members. Liner notes inside the promo cassette say: "The Darling Buds have certainly made a name for themselves on both sides of the Atlantic. With their debut release, "POP SAID...," the Darling Buds became press darlings in the UK with their polished girl pop. They followed that up with "CRAWDADDY," a harder-sounding, more ambitious record for the Buds. The combination worked, and the Darling Buds grew fans all over the United States (and the rest of the world). Now the Darling Buds bring us EROTICA. EROTICA, which was produced by Stephen Street, represents a great step ahead for the Buds. The band has moved into a more guitar rock driven direction -- integrating Andrea's vocals into the mix. EROTICA sounds more like the new breed of Creation bands like Ride and My Bloody Valentine. The first single from EROTICA, "Please Yourself," will be released at the end of August in CD-5 form, which also includes the UK single, "Sure Thing," and two non-lp tracks."
