--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- DARLING BUDS discography: Singles section ------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1987 "Just To Be Seen"/"If I Said" formats serial numbers 7" only dar001 Band lineup: Andrea - vocals, simon - bass, harley - guitar and I think that's pretty obviously a drum machine I hear keeping the beat! Recorded at Loco Studios in June 1986 Produced by the Darling Buds and engineered by Tim Lewis COMMENTS: Their debut - released in February 1987. Sides are labelled "a" and "aa". No b-side! Strange cover photo of a man holding a newspaper next to two odd-looking statues. 1988 "Shame On You" formats serial numbers 12" 12 bud 1 7" (unknown) 12" TRACKLISTING: A-side: Shame On You / Valentine B-side: Uptight The 7" single has "Valentine" on the b-side and is missing "Uptight". Recorded at the Greenhouse in December 1987, released in March 1988. COMMENTS: Side A inner groove is engraved: "Rough winds do shake". This is an inside joke that gives a clue as to where they came up with the idea to name themselves "The Darling Buds". Here's a quote from Shakespeare: "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate. Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May. And summer's lease hath all too short a date." (Shakespeare, Sonnet XVIII) [The above is from http://www.bme.jhu.edu/~dbarbour/Public/bandnames] 1988 "It's All Up To You" formats serial numbers 12" 12ntv 33 7" NTV33 7" w/ gatefold sleeve (unknown) TRACKLISTING: 12"/7" It's All Up To You 12"/7" Think of Me 12" That's the Reason 7" gatefold adds one more:Spin (flexidisc version) Comments: "Spin (flexidisc version)" has more cymbals, heavier drums, and as near as I can tell is really just the same version as from their next single (see below). The gatefold sleeves are numbered. 1988 ??? one more indy 12" single probably contains When It Feels Good / Spin / Uptight 1988(?) split flexidisc: Darling Buds/Bubblegum Splash songs: "Spin"/"If Only" serial #: BONKON001 Note: I'm unsure of what the story is behind this. Maybe it came free with a magazine? 1988 "Burst" (September 1988) formats serial numbers 12" BLOND T1 CD BLOND C1 7" BLOND1 7" box set BLOND B1 (comes with floral badges and poster of cover) 7" w/ gatefold sleeve BLOND Q1 TRACKLISTING: CD/12"/7" Burst (7" version) CD/12" Burst (album version) CD/12"/box set 7" Big Head (album version) CD/12" Just Say So gatefold 7" Shame on You (slightlydelic version) Comments: "Shame on You (slightlydelic version)" is slowed down and has lots of backward recording and vocals - another fun rare track! Also, as best as my ears can tell, the 7" version of "Burst" is really the album version and the version that is labeled as being from the album is actually a slightly re-recorded version. There's a definite difference in the way the riff is played and the overall tempo of the track. 1989 "Hit the Ground" (December 1988) formats serial numbers 12" BLOND T2 CD BLOND C2 7" BLOND Q2 (comes in cloth bag with flowers printed on it) 10" BLOND X2 TRACKLISTING: CD/12"/10"/7" - Hit the Ground CD/12"/7" - Pretty Girl CD/12" - If I Said (re-recording of their first single) CD/12" - Hit the Ground (12" version) 10" - You've Got To Choose (live) 10" - When It Feels Good (live) COMMENTS: - "Hit the Ground" (12" version) is 17 seconds longer and arranged slightly differently. - live tracks on 10" are "Rough as F**k mixes live Cambridge University 19/11/88" 1989 "Let's Go Round There" formats serial numbers 12" BLOND T3 12" etched flower logo BLOND Q3 (contains no tracks on etched b-side) CD BLOND C3 7" yellow vinyl BLOND V3 7" gatefold sleeve BLOND E3 TRACKLISTING: CD/12"/7" Let's Go Round There CD/12"/7" Turn You On CD/12" Different Daze 7" gatefold adds one more:It's All Up To You (flipflop version) Comments: - the "flipflop version" of "It's All Up To You" has all new music and lyrics set to a rap beat. It leads off with an album track from CRAWDADDY, then finishes with 3 new tracks - two of which later ended up on EROTICA. "Love and Death" is a great high-powered track that should've been included on EROTICA, but was left off for unknown reasons. These new tracks seem to be exactly the same versions as on EROTICA, but the mix seems to be *slightly* different, occasionally emphasizing a different component of a track. 1992 "Sure Thing" format serial numbers CD (Austria & UK) 658215 2 12"(UK) (unknown) 7" (exists, but data is unknown) TRACKLISTING: Sure Thing / Baby Head / Suffer / What Goes Around #1 and #3 produced by Stephen Street and assisted by David Snell #2 and #4 produced by the Darling Buds and engineered by Alessandro Silva Jon Lee plays drums on #2 and #4 The 12" single does not have the track "Babyhead". 1992 "Please Yourself" format serial numbers CD (US promo) 42K 74446 flexidisc (UK promo) (unknown) CD TRACKLISTING: Please Yourself / Sure Thing / Baby Head / Suffer The flexidisc only has one track and says "Not For Resale".
