How To Cultivate A Spirit Of Detachment

We need to ask the following four questions regularly of ourselves:

First, we should ask ourselves if there is anything to which we have an inordinate attachment?
What is my attitude toward my job, my career, food, drink, gambling, social functions, shopping etc.? Has my sevice to God become an idol?

Second, we need to ask ourselves to what extent we practice charity through tithing and volunteering?
Do I spend some time in volunteer work, freely giving of my gifts and abilities to build up the Kingdom of God through service? Is my attitude toward giving one of cheerfulness and gratitude, or is it grudging?

Third, we need to evaluate all that comes to us through the senses to judge if they are leading us closer to God or away from Him.
What do I watch on television or what do I read. What kinds of movies to I go to? How do I spend my free time? Do I dress modestly? Am I involved in any immoral relationships? Do I participate in gossiping?

Finally, we must be honest about how we stand when it comes to obedience.
Do I accept what I am told to do -- by employers, heads of committees, my pastor, my spouse, my parents -- as coming from God Himself? Do I respond with openness of heart or with grumbling? Do I look for God's will when making important decisions in my life or do I rush ahead with my own plans?
