A CHEROKEE INDIAN WOMAN....

When I was a little girl, there was a story, a "rumor", about my father's family. The "rumor"was that in my father's family, was "An Indian Woman"... The way it was told was not a joyous memory. It was not one of glamor. It was secretive, with a hint of shame of some kind. I began doing Genealogy in 1984. I found out after my father's death, from his only sister, what my grandfather's name was. I was given a few names and dates and was told everything started in the State of Arkansas, where my father was born. I asked her about the Indian Woman. She told me, with a voice that was half angry... that there absolutely was no such person, that story was just some rumor, probably started by my mother. When she died, I feared all of the secrets died too. I continued my search, getting names from my mother about her side of the family. When I ran into 'the walls", I found that if I sent for a death certificate, names of father and mother were included. (even though birth certificates are not always correct) After several years, and a lot of money for long distance phone calls, certificates, etc... I dared to talk to one of my dad's 2nd or 3rd cousins. She gave me some other names. I sent for more certificates, only to find that my grgandparents were not born in Arkansas. I was referred to another certificate of death. Her name was Sarah...I had heard that my dad's grandmother's name was Sarah. The death certificate gave me Missouri as a Birthplace, and her fathers name, with her mother's first name . ROBERTSON... That certainly didn't sound likee the Indian names I had heard on television shows. A few more years passed, and still I was thinking about "The Indian Woman." It was about three years ago. I had the opportunity to speak with a distant relative of my dad's in Arkansas via the telephone. She confirmed(she was working on genealogy too) that not only was there "An Indian Woman", but her name was in fact Sarah Robertson, she sent me her picture, with her husband, my grgrandfather, and their daughter. There it was in the letter! It was a number! Cherokee Roll number... I can now upload her photo...Please ask...email me. What I saw in her face (in the photo) was one that faintly resembles my own. I had found a part of myself. It is my desire now, to learn about her, the culture, her struggles, her joys, her people...so that she won't be forgotten, so that my grgrandchildren will know... she did exist... and I am now looking for another"Indian Woman", her mother...and her father..."Our ancestors" I am grateful to the many people that have helped me thus far. Some of their work I am "Linking" to my page. In telling their stories, in their research I continue to do my own. I am in hopes that others that are "Searching" will find what they seek as well. It is over 5 years now, since I began my story on this website. My Grandmother's search continues....
