Day 4

I didn't get a chance to start on the books last night, because when I got home there were about a half dozen messages on my answering machine. One was my boss wanting to know if I was coming in to work today. He said everyone missing Friday was understandable, and wouldn't be held against us, but we still had a business to run. I called him and told him that, yes, I would be in today.
Another message was from an old girlfriend. We'd dated for a while years ago, and had broken up on good terms (really!). We stayed friends, but I hadn't heard from her since she'd gotten married about four years ago. In her message she said her husband and son were both among the missing, and she didn't know what to do. I called her back, and after getting her calmed down, I told her to get some things together and go stay with her sister for a while until this all got cleared up, and that I was sure her husband and son were all right and would turn up soon. (Actually, I wasn't sure of anything of the sort, but it wasn't the time for total candor.)
By the time I had returned the calls that were worth returning, it was too late to get started on the books I had borrowed. I vowed I would start reading them tonight no matter what.

Day 5

Didn't get a lot of sleep last night, either, but for a totally different reason. If what I read in those books is right, we're all going to be in big trouble soon. I need to read some more and think about this.
