Critcal Mass Boise

Boise's largest Critical Mass ever took place on July 8th. Over 150 cyclists, skateboarders, and a few wheelchairs stopped traffic for over an hour in downtown Boise to protest a city council proposal to limit "wheeled devices" in the downtown core. The proposal would create a dismount zone of about 12 square blocks, forcing cyclists to either dismount and walk, or fend for themselves on narrow, congested downtown streets without bike lanes. The event attracted the attention of the local newspaper and the alternative weekly paper, whose August 13th edition contains a cover story on bicycle commuting in Boise. The cars and cops of Boise took notice too; one protester was punched by a passerby, and the Boise Police Department spent the better part of an hour unsuccessfully trying to clear the streets. Critical Mass will continue in Boise until the city takes proactive steps to promote the use of the bike as transportation. Check this site for upcoming rides....
