DeForest Kelly, who co-starred as Star Trek's Dr.McCoy died on Friday June 11, 1999 at 12:15pm at 79 at the Motion Picture Fund Hospital in Woodland Hills, California after being in the hospital for three months suffering from a "lingering illness". Kelly is the first major member of Star Trek to pass away. He was well known for his famous phrase "He's dead Jim" on the original Star Trek series. William Shatner (Captain James Kirk), Leonard Nimoy (Mr. Spock), and DeForest Kelly (Dr. Leonard McCoy) formed the original Trek's holy troika. They were the trio who got the biggest storylines, the best billing, the most money, and the clearest shots at post-Trek careers. Leonard Nimoy said "He was a decent, loving, caring partner and will be deeply missed. He represented humanity and it fitted him well." DeForest Kelly co-starred as Bones on the 1966-1969 NBC series and in six movies, from 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture to 1991's Star Trek IV: The Undiscvered Country. Flowers were placed on DeForest Kelly's Hollywood Walk of Fame star. Prior to wearing a star fleet uniform he wore a cowboy outfit. He worked in several TV Western's such as "Rawhide", "The Virginian", and "Zane Gray Theatre" in the 1950's and 1960's. He was born on January 20, 1920 in Atlanta Georgia. He wanted to be an actor ever since he was a teenager. He was discovered by a talent scout for Paramount Pictures while appearing in a stage play. No contracts appeared untill he returned from a tour in World War II. His first film was 1947's "Fear in the Night". Soon he became a workhourse on the Paramount lot appearing in dozens of small flics. In 1957 he won the role of Morgan Earp in "Gun Fight at the O.K. Corral" with Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas. He later returned to the Corral in the 1968 Star Trek episode "Spectre of the Gun", although this time he played on the side of the Clanton's. His most noted NON-TREK film of the period was killer-Bunny horror flick in 1972 called "Night of the Lepus". Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Carolyn, who was being treated at the same hospital for a broken leg and other complications.

Brent Spiner, ("Data"), who briefly worked with Kelly in the pilot episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation was saddened by the news. "I hadn't heard. What a loss. Maybe the nicest person of all involved with Star Trek. I was honored to share a scene with him"
Majel Barrett Roddenberry, was stunned by the news saying "He was truly one of the most remarkable and talented men to walk the face of the earth. This is the biggest loss that Star Trek will ever have, excluding Gene."
