Before the game, the Marlins told right-hander Donn Pall he would return to Triple
A Charlotte after the game. Pall, who allowed Sammy Sosa's game-tying home
run in the eighth, shook hands with Ed Vosberg before
leaving for the airport. He had a 3.86 ERA in 2 1/3 innings.

Ed Vosberg (1-0), the fifth Marlins' pitcher, retired two
batters in the 10th for the win. Kevin Brown started and gave
up eight over eight innings.
Florida, which improved to 9-4 in extra innings.
"It feels really good," said Vosberg. "I struggled at the start
of the season (with the Rangers) and Baltimore had a lot to do
with it."
Vosberg, who has yet to allow a run since joining the Marlins on Aug. 12, entered
in the 10th with one out, a runner at first and a 3-1 count on Jeffrey Hammonds.
Vosberg walked Hammonds then walked Brady Anderson, missing with a 3-2
pitch. But he came back to retire Jerome Walton, who hit a fielder's choice
grounder to third before fanning Surhoff.

MIAMI (Sep 23, 1997 - 03:45 EDT) -- Rehashing the Florida Marlins' latest loss, an angry Jim
Leyland took a drag on his cigarette, then launched into another string of profanities.
He was smoking and steaming.
The Marlins' bid to clinch a playoff berth in their final home game Monday night ended instead with
their third consecutive loss to the New York Mets, 10-3.The sloppy showing left Leyland livid. In a harangue filled with expletives, he said nine times that he
was "very cocksucking disappointed" in his team's effort.
" Fucking guys should get their goddamn fucking mind on what the fuck we need to fucking do instead of what might the fuck happen in the goddamn future," he
said. "They'd fucking better get their fucking mind on what the fuck they're doing. We're a lot more fucking professional than that,
and they ought to start acting the fuck like it."
The other Marlins with postseason experience are third baseman Bobby
Bonilla, outfielder Jim Eisenreich, infielders Darren Daulton and John Wehner, and pitchers Dennis
Cook, Ed Vosberg and Alex Fernandez. ...

Ed's Response To Livan's Game 5 Performance
As Reported By Dan LeBastard
All eyes on him
Out in the bullpen, during the ninth inning, Marlins reliever Ed Vosberg turned to
Robb Nen.
``How the hell is he doing that?'' Vosberg asked.
``He's not human,'' Nen replied. ``He's a horse.''
``I wish I had a better seat,'' Vosberg said.
Next to them, in right field, Gary Sheffield kept hopping on his toes, punching his
glove, goose bumps covering both arms.
``You know how I went berserk after that Giants game, screaming and pumping
my fists after I scored the winning run?'' Sheffield said. ``I felt more than that in that
ninth inning. And I had to keep it all inside.''

Braves Sleep With Fishes
Before the seventh, Leyland had told Brown that he was finished for the
night, but Brown fought the decision, yelling at Leyland -- who agreed
to let Brown continue. Brown stayed in the game, Leyland kept a pack
of Marlboros and a teal-colored lighter at his side, fretting.

Even earlier, mania flared at the Pembroke Lakes Mall, where 350 people lined up
at midday outside a sporting goods store to get autographs from reserve outfielder
John Cangelosi and relief pitcher Ed Vosberg.

"It hurts,'' Marlins General Manager Dave Dombrowski said, stone-faced, an
hour after the news conference at Pro Player Stadium. ``I don't think our club will
be a world-championship caliber club next season.''
And that wasn't the only distressing development. Smiley also said fans should not
expect the Marlins to rank among the sport's big spenders again unless they get a
new revenue-generating stadium with a retractable roof.
``If the team must remain here at Pro Player Stadium . . . then I don't believe the
Marlins will ever be in the World Series again,'' Huizenga said. "The biggest problem here is the telephones.
The guys who take care of them are lazy and incompetent and more interested in stuffing themselves with free food, begging
for souvenirs , robbing everything that is not nailed down and hiding when people want them to fix things. Also I have RF on my dry pairs. Maybe if we build a new stadium we can get away from them."
The catch is the Marlins want the new facility to be financed largely through public
money, even though no local government appears to have resources readily
available to pay the estimated $300 million cost.

Death To All Non Believers
Man Planned Own Shooting by Cops
Filed at 7:13 p.m. EST
By The Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) -- Moshe ``Moe'' Pergament was
a well-mannered college student.
On Friday night, Pergament, depressed over a reported $6,000 in
gambling debts, got himself shot to death by police on Long Island by
pointing what turned out to be a toy gun at them, police said.
``I'm sorry to get you involved,'' the 19-year-old Pergament had written in
a letter addressed in advance to ``the officer who shot me!''
``I just needed to die,'' he wrote.
According to police, Pergament was speeding and driving erratically on
the Long Island Expressway, apparently in an effort to get stopped. When
Officer Thomas Pollock pulled the car over in Syosset, Pergament
jumped out and began waving his arms wildly.
Pollock ordered Pergament back into the car, and Pergament pulled the
toy revolver from his waistband. A second officer, Anthony Sica, arrived.
Police said Pergament began advancing, ignoring commands to drop the
gun. The two officers fired a total of as many as three shots.
Police believe Pergament was distressed over gambling debts, reportedly
$6,000 lost on last month's World Series.

The Padres, say baseball sources, are expected to acquire a left-handed relief
pitcher today in return for a prospect. Details haven't been finalized, but a top
candidate is Ed Vosberg, a former Padre who pitched for the Rangers and
Marlins last season. Vosberg, 36, was with the Marlins through their postseason
run to the World Series title.
* * *
Vosberg traded to Padres
The Marlins sent left-handed reliever Ed Vosberg to the San Diego Padres
Thursday for minor league pitcher Chris Clark.
The 36-year-old Vosbergestablished career-highs in 1997 with 59
appearances, 57 innings pitched and 37 strikeouts. He returns to the team
that originally drafted him in 1983, when he appeared in five games.
Vosberg has also spent time with the San Francisco Giants and the
Oakland Athletics and has posted a 9-13 record with a 4.09 ERA and 13
saves in 194 career outings (191 in relief). His three major league starts
were with the Padres.
Clark was 5-5 with a 4.15 ERA in 32 games and 11 starts at Single-A
Clinton in 1997. He was a 41st-round draft pick by San Diego in 1994.
* * *
With yesterday's trade for lefty reliever Ed Vosberg, a veteran with a fabulous pickoff move,
the Padres have added three relievers in the last three days: Vosberg, who pitched in four
postseason games with the Marlins last month; Dan Miceli, a right-handed setup man who made
71 appearances with the Tigers last year; and former Yankee Brian Boehringer, a right-handed
middle reliever.
The Padres expect Vosberg to become manager Bruce Bochy's first reliable lefty reliever since Bochy took over in 1995.
"In almost 50 innings last year, there wasn't a stolen base attempted against him," Towers said. "He holds runners real well and will be a good situational left-hander."
With the Rangers last year, he was 1-2 with a 4.61 ERA in 41 games. Dealt to Florida for Rick Helling, he was 1-1 with a 3.75 ERA and a phony baloney save for the Marlins. In the National League Championship Series, he pitched 2-2/3 scoreless innings against the Braves. The Indians scored two runs off him in Game 4 of the World Series. In Game 6, he pitched a scoreless inning.
Vosberg, a Padre in '86, has also pitched for the Giants and A's. His best season came in 1996, when he had eight saves and a 3.27 ERA for the Rangers.
