General Franklin
Mathew Brady CDV of seated Union General, William Buel Franklin (1823-1903). Franklin graduated from West Point in 1843 and served in the U.S. Engineers. He accompanied Kearney on the Rocky Mountain Expedition and served with distinction in the Mexican War. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he served as colonel of the 12th. U.S. Infantry and was commissioned Brigadier General on the 17th. of May 1861. He commanded the 1st. brigade, 1st. division at First Bull Run, participated in the siege of Yorktown and the Peninsula battles (where he commanded the VI Corps). Franklin was named Major General on the 4th. of July 1862. At Fredericksburg he led the Left Grand Division and was blamed for Union failure. He was sent to the western theatre and ended the war in disgrace. From 1866 to 1888 he served as vice president of the Colt Fire Arms Manufacturing Company. Brady photos are getting hard to come by, and this General is also hard to find. $185.00
