The Unfinished Letter. Mannas(sic) Station, Va. May 20th. 1862 "...The Rebs came rite down in site of us, threw out their picket down close to the river. Our picket menned end of the bridge and the rebs on the river. We cum away the next morning before lite and went up to the Regt. and took the cars. We then got first rate comfortable"
The letter was never finished. Was he killed? One can only wonder.
This spot (Manassas Station) saw some very heavy fighting. In fact in August of 1862 Stonewall Jackson in a series of forced marches, swept round the rear of Popes army, seized the railroad and than captured the immense depot of supplies at Manassas Station. It was there that Union General George W. Taylor was mortaly wounded and soon died.
What a piece of history this letter is!
