 ELECTRICAL ENERGY AUDIT FACILITY AT IIT DELHI

Background
`Energy Saved is Energy Generated'

India is facing grave crisis due to acute shortage of Electrical Energy and ever growing demand.  With 80,000MW of installed capacity country needs an additional 80,000MW during the next five years.  Bulk of the Electricity is consumed by Industrial sector followed by Agriculture, domestic and commercial applications.  More than 70% of the electricity is consumed by electric motors mainly in industry, agriculture and domestic appliances.  Even a 5% saving in electricity will prevent the need to install power plants of a few thousand MW.  Energy conservation has now become a necessity with Government of India formulating mandatory Energy Audit and Energy conservation regulations.

Considerable energy saving is possible through proper choice of equipment's and their effective use.  Data of energy consumption pattern through Energy Audit for any given application is essential to evolve conservation measures.  Since diagnosis proceeds treatment and not an end in itself one should find technical solution for the problem of inefficient energy use.  In view of the above, a State of ARt `Electrical Energy Audit and Energy Conservation' facility has been established at IIT, Delhi with a load of Rs.75 lacs from World Bank through ICICI.

Facilities Established

Following facilities/laboratory have been established

1. Energy Instrumentation facility
2. Computerized test facility for Energy Converters and Drives
3. Computation and CAD facility for Energy System
4. Electrical Machine Design Center.

Electrical Energy Audit:

Electrical Energy Audit for different establishments can be carried out by the sophisticated Instrumentation and Data acquisition facility comprising the following instruments and accessories

1. PLC BASED DATA ACQUISITION SYSTEM FOR TESTING MOTOR & DRIVES

PLC-5/30    (Allen Bradley-USA)
Power Monitor   (Allen Bradley-USA)
Variable Freq. Drive (Allen Bradley-USA)
Digital DC Drive  (Kirlosker-India)
Torque Transducer  (Vibrometer-Switzerland)

2. INSTRUMENTATION FACILITY:
A) POWER ANALYZER:
3 Phase Power Analyser Voltech (UK)
(PC3300)
3 Phase Power Analyser Voltech (UK)
(PM300)
Single Phase Power   Voltech (UK)
Analyser (PM100)

B) OSCILLOSCOPES:
4 Channel Oscilloscope Hewlett
(54602b)    Packard   (USA)
Tektronix Real Time  Tektronix (USA)
(TSH720)
Scope Meter   Fluke (Holland)
(99/105)

C) CLAMP ON CURRENT/VOLTAGE/POWER METER:
Digital Clamp Meter  Kyoritsu (Japan)
Digital Clamp-On Tester Yokogawa (Japan)
AC/DC Clamp Meter  Fluke    (Holland)
HP974A Multimeter  HP  (USA)
HP34401 A Multimeter HP  (USA)

D) NON-ELECTRICAL QUALITY METERS:
Digital Tachometer   Yokogawa  (Japan)
Digital Thermometer   Yokogawa  (Japan)
Digital Illuminance Meter Yokogawa  (Japan)
Electronic Motor   EMC Electronik
Checker     (India)

F) ENERGY METER:

8) INTEGRATED MOTOR DESIGN SOFTWARE
9) MICROSIM DESIGN LAB
10)  MATLAB / SIMULINK

Who Can use the facility ?

Any industry or organization using considerable electricity and paying significant energy bills should energy audit through the above facility.  Typical users may be:

Industry

* Textile Mills
* Cement Plants
* Steel and Metals
* Sugar and Paper Mills
* Petrochemicals
* Machine Tools
* Mining
* Irrigation and Agriculture (Pump sets)
* Power Plants
* Government Building/Departments
* University Campuses/R&D Institutions
* Commercial Establishments, e.g: Hotels, shopping complexes
* Computer Centers/IT users
* Domestic Sector

Energy Audit is a comprehensive study having following typical applications of electrical energy

Motors driving pumps, blowers, compressors and fans
Substation and Distribution Transformers
Illumination/Lighting

Electric Furnaces/Heating
Airconditioners
Electric Appliances

Since motors are the workhorses in industry they are the major energy guzzlers.  We should ensure their more efficient operation.  Energy Audit also includes on line efficiency estimation which may lead to energy labeling.  Considerable energy saving is possible by improved power transmission in Drives and use of energy efficient equipment's.  Energy audit often includes power quality to assess the nature of supply voltages, unbalance, frequency and waveform, based on which suggestions may emerge to improve power quality.  Sophisticated instrumentation procured by IIT Delhi facilitates detailed studies to arrive at appropriate solutions

Total Solution Ensured:

Apart from the sophisticated and State of Art facility created as above, IIT Delhi has faculty with international level of expertise in the following areas.

* Electrical Machines & Drives
* Power Systems & load Management
* Power Electronics
* Fluid & Solid Machines
* Machine Dynamics
* Computers and Instrumentation
* Thermodynamics
* Air conditioning

Total solution to the Electricity consumption problem towards considerable energy saving can be ensured by the above combination of infrastructure and expertise.  After conducting Energy Audit Studies, a comprehensive technical report suggesting specific actions would be provided to the clients.
