Daniel Clowes
CARICATURE by Daniel Clowes CARICATURE
by Daniel Clowes
Paperback: 102 pages
Fantagraphics Books
ISBN: 1560974583
$16.95
Dan Clowes follows his amazing graphic novel, Ghost World, with an equally stunning collection of nine short comics stories. His characters drift through the world in detached desperation, and they seem all the more real for it. Take the caricature artist, Mal Rosen, of the first story. His encounter with a young girl at an art festival plays out like a series of small self-discoveries, leaving him hollow and empty like a fresh exhalation.
In this same sad, insightful way, all of these tales are coming-of-age stories--there's the boy who is too old for trick-or-treating ("Immortal, Invisible"), the 18-year-old virgin trying to create a new tough-guy persona ("Blue Italian Shit"), and the image-obsessed Mona Beadle from "Green Eyeliner," which originally appeared in Esquire.
--Jim Pascoe
"Dan Clowes is a master storyteller and artist-- there's poetry in every panel."
--ESQUIRE

"The country's premier underground cartoonist."

Now a Motion Picture from Terry Zwigoff

Dan Clowes is one of the most respected cartoonists of his generation, and GHOST WORLD is his magnum opus. GHOST WORLD follows the adventures of two teenage girls, Enid and Becky. Enid and Becky are best friends facing the prospect of growing up, and more importantly, apart. Both naturalistic and nostalgic, Clowes carves a layered narrative out of the daily existance of these two fully-realized young women.

Dan Clowes described the story in GHOST WORLD as the examination of "the lives of two recent high school graduates from the advantaged perch of a constant and (mostly) undetectable eavesdropper, with the shaky detachment of a scientist who has grown fond of the prize microbes in his petri dish." From this perch comes a revelation about adolescence that is both subtle and coolly beautiful. Critics have pointed out Clowes's cynicism and vicious social commentary, but if you concentrate on those aspects, you'll miss the exquisite whole that Clowes has captured. Each chapter ends with melancholia that builds towards the amazing, detached, ghostlike ending.

"No one has his eye - or ear - focused on youth as acutely as graphic novelist Daniel Clowes."

--VOGUE
"[Clowes] spells out the realities of teen angst as powerfully and authentically as Salinger did in THE CATCHER IN THE RYE for an earlier generation."
--VILLAGE VOICE
"Clowes' writing and art are crisp, clear, and far removed from what most people expect from comic books."
--SEATTLE WEEKLY

GHOST WORLD MOVIE
Dan Clowes' GHOST WORLD is considered his Magnum Opus, quite a feat since he is probably the most respected cartoonist in America after R.Crumb. The book, originally serialized in the pages of his comic book series EIGHTBALL, is now a motion picture, directed by Terry Zwigoff, the man behind the acclaimed documentary CRUMB (about the cartoonist of the same name). Clowes and Zwigoff have written the screenplay. The film is produced by Danny DeVito's Jersey Pictures (PULP FICTION, GET SHORTY).
DANIEL CLOWES
Like a Velvet Glove Cast In Iron by Daniel Clowes LIKE A VELVET GLOVE CAST IN IRON
by Daniel Clowes
Paperback: 144 pages
Fantagraphics Books
ISBN: 1560971169
$19.95
"The artwork is haunting, calculated and vehement. Its storytelling ability is unparalleled; each face built archetypically, every detail explains what the written word cannot. Even if for that reason alone, I'd earnestly recommend VELVET GLOVE as a masterpiece of postmodern fairy-telling and eager self-destruction."
--Your Flesh
Some consider this comic book novel obtuse; others find it deeply intellectual. Whatever the reaction, it's hard to refute its daring originality and smooth artwork. Described as "a terrifying journey into madness," the story revolves around Clay Loudermilk as he stumbles upon the mysteries behind a snuff film. Soon he's involved with increasingly bizarre characters who hang in the air like stale cigarette smoke. Fans of movie director David Lynch who aren't already tipped to Daniel Clowes' popular work should take note.

A freaky story about a man looking for his ex-wife who he sees in an adult film. From the EIGHTBALL series, this book collects all ten parts of the orginal story. Classic and distrubing tale with so many odd events that you will actually get used to them. The story is a perfect match for Clowes' brilliant black and white artwork.

Alternative Comics!
Dan Clowes's epic exploration of the seamy underbelly of America makes TWIN PEAKS look like CAPTAIN KANGAROO. The images in VELVET GLOVE are like nothing you've ever seen before, but they'll haunt you forever: murder, mutilation, pornography, madness, and death. Collected from the pages of Clowes's acclaimed comic, EIGHTBALL, LIKE A VELVET GLOVE CAST IN IRON showcases some of the best and most arresting work available in comics.
