In publized news stories, Daniel Valenzuela will finally take charge of the position of city manager for the City of Eagle Pass on Monday. This was announced by Mayor Chad Foster after a thorough background evaluation prompted by problems related to the hiring and firing of Glen Starnes.
According to news stories, Valenzuela previously worked as city manager in Fort Stockton. His work history also includes employment with hospitals.
His salary has been set at $85,000 annually and starts on a six month probationary hiring period.
Teen Arrested for Murder in Deadly Accident

Police have arrested one man for murder and intoxication assault after a major accident on the west side.
But he told News 4 he didn't do it.
"I wasn't the one driving the car," said Justin Toney.
Police say the 19-year-old man was driving when he almost hit a patrol car Saturday morning.
Police say he then ran a stop sign and t-boning a car. A passenger in that car, 60-year-old Ruben Sepulveda of Eagle Pass, died at the scene.

Eagle Pass Police Chief Antonio Castañeda was arrested Friday morning on a Class A misdemeanor charge of hindering apprehension or prosecution.
The Maverick County Attorney’s office brought the charge against Castañeda for allegedly helping former city manager Glen Starnes sneak out of a meeting Jan. 15

Piedras Negras de Noche destroyed by fire

A well known destination for Eagle Passans has always been Piedras Negras de Noche which is easily seen adjacent to IH 35 as one enters the downtown area of San Antonio. Last night at approximately 2:45am the restaurant was reported on fire and while the fire did little visible damage to the outside walls, the interior was completed gutted. The fire has been attributed to possible food left cooking according to one source.
Long time owner, Juan Rodriguez took over the restaurant from his father who came from Piedras Negras, Coahuila Mexico in the 1960's and opened Piedras Negras de Noche in 1979.
The owner, Juan Rodriguez plans to rebuild the restaurant.
All Star Softball Team goes to Louisiana

The
Eagle Pass Youth Softball Association Softball team
will be traveling to Brusly,
Louisiana on July 17th to take part in the Babe Ruth Southwest Regional
Tournament according to Association president, Tina Moreno.
Organizers and parents will be taking as many as 65 players that form 5 different
teams comprised of ages 8,10,12,14 and 16 years old. Team managers are Willie
Ruiz, Cesar Flores, Reynol Mendoza, Carlos Rodriguez and Steve Esquivel.
The parents of each team are currently involved in fundraising to help pay for their
expenses associated with the tournament which could last 5 days if any team
advances to the finals. Although this is a separate effort on the part of parents, the
Association will make sure that all contributions are accounted for and letters to
that effect have been provided as verification.
The Association has already collected $15,000 which they estimate will be enough
to cover the teams expenses including gas, meals and accomodations.
The Association invites the public to attend their regularly scheduled Board
meetings and added that all their records, including fundraising and expenses are
public record and available to everyone.
Twenty-five year old shot to death

The Mexican press reports that Erick Aguirre Morales, a 25 year old male, was shot to death on July 7th in the 1300 block of Leonel in Las Quintas subdivision about 10:30pm. The alleged shooter now identified as 20 year old Alberto Duenes fled the scene but was captured hours later by Maverick County Sheriff officers who were also assisted by officers from the Eagle Pass Police Department. Duenes remains in custody pending formal charges and possible posting of bond.
According to the news source, Morales received two shots to the abdomen and another to the body with a 22 calibre weapon. Judge Aranda was summoned and officially pronounced Morales' death. He also requested an autopsy.
The motive for the shooting is not known at this time.

The Babe Ruth League tournaments scheduled for Eagle Pass this summer will be the South Texas State Tournaments for
the 13 year old division and the 16 year old division in boys' baseball. These tournaments will be played concurrently at
Moncada Baseball Field beginning on July 11th.
The Babe Ruth Cal Ripken South Texas State tournaments will also be held in Eagle Pass at Chittim Field for the 9 yr. olds,
the 10 yr. olds, the 11 yr. olds and the 12 yr. olds division beginning on June 27th.
Unfortunately there will only be state softball tournaments in Eagle Pass this summer as all the Regionals will be in
Louisiana.
