The Bouvier des Flandres was originally bred to drive stock rather than to herd them. He has also been used in Belgium (his country of origin) for police work and as a draft dog, pulling carts. This is an all around working dog and has many uses, though unfortunately, family pet isn't usually among them.
Size:
Males: 24 ½ to 27 ½ inches.
Females: 23 ½ to 26 ½ inches.
Colors:
From fawn to black, passing through salt and pepper, gray and brindle.
Coat:
Double coated with the undercoat soft, furry and close. The outercoat is wirey and shaggy, free from curl. Very thick mustache and beard as well as eyebrows. Shedding is constant.
Temperament:
Very suspicous of dogs and people.
Prefers being outdoors.
When properly trained, are usually trustworthy off lead.
Can be very vocal. They have a very loud, sharp bark.
Excellent as guard dogs.
Can not usually be trusted with small children.
Usually not difficult to housebreak.
Usually not good with other animals.
Reception to Training:
Excellent but sharp.
Energy Level: med. High
Health Problems:
hip and elbow displasia, allergies, Epilepsy, PRA, cataracts.
Summary:
This breed needs to be given a job to do. If he is left to his own devices, he may create one that his owner might not like.
