Most of the best cars on the market were brought together in 1987 for a comparison test regarding top speed, 1/4 mile, and skid pad. The results were as follows: 1. Chevrolet Corvette - 153 mph, 1/4 mile in 14.55 sec, .92g 2. Ford Mustang GT - 150 mph, 1/4 mile in 14.20 sec, .85g 3. Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe - 148 mph, 1/4 mile in 15.70 sec, .89g 4. Pontiac Firebird - 143 mph, 1/4 mile in 15.60 sec, .87g 5. Chevrolet Camaro - 140 mph, 1/4 mile in 15.56 sec, .85g 6. Dodge Daytona Shelby - 137 mph, 1/4 mile in 15.82 sec, .86g 7. Buick Grand National - 132 mph, 1/4 mile in 14.22 sec, .79g The Thunderbird did well. It could have done better though. What they didn't say was that all the cars were fresh EXCEPT the Thunderbird - which had 87,000 miles. It had been beaten by all the reviewers and magazines. Pretty good showing for the T-bird. Too bad it wasn't the 1988, which extended the full boost pressure to all gears rather than just the first two (1987). In 1987, it had 15psi in first and second, 10psi in all other gears. In 1988, a software change allowed 15psi pressure in all gears. It would have done better yet in the 1/4 mile! Thanks to Anthony Spencer for all the info.
