"I will admit that I’ve been rather slow to pick up on
the work of Hideyo Miyazaki, but after seeing Buena Vista’s wonderful
domestic release of KIKI’S DELIVERY SERVICE this year, I am a rabid
convert. In fact, if that film hadn't been made in 1989 (!!), it
would make my list as best animated film of the year, even with A
BUG’S LIFE and PRINCE OF EGYPT in the running. I’ve been offered
several opportunities to see an import version of MONONOKE, but
I’ve decided to hold out for the theatrical release this summer
for a number of reasons. First, and most importantly, I still believe
that any film is going to work better on the big screen. Second, I
trust Disney to dub this film properly. They did a phenomenal job on
KIKI’S, and they’ve hired Neil Gaiman to write the English
translation script for this film. I know many fans are bitching
that they want a subtitled release, but with animation as beautiful as
the hand-drawn work that Miyazaki does, I want that whole frame clear
so I can drink in the details. Finally, I’m curious as to what
reaction the crowds will have to a film that defies conventional
American thinking about what a “cartoon” can be.
"David Hughes wrote a two-page article after talking to Neil Gaiman. The most prominent points include:
Miramax would not send a video for Gaiman's first viewing of MH. They flew him to Hollywood to see it on a big screen. Gaiman: "This is
amazing. This is quite wonderful. I've never seen anything like this
before." He calls MH a "gorgeous film" and "this beautiful piece of
artwork." Gaiman reports all the voice talent received the same
treatment. Miramax then gave him the Studio Gainax transcript of the English
subtitles and a video of the movie. Studio Ghibli has reviewed his
script and instructed him on changes they want. Gaiman: "This is a
serious film, we're doing it properly, and it's going to take time to do
it right." He has seen some of the internet comments of anime fans and
finds much of the uninformed critical speculation idiotic. Gaiman worked to convey
cultural information to an American audience. He claims to have kept
extra dialogue to a minimum. "There are a couple of scenes where I added
bits of information that people would have otherwise been puzzled by. But my [intention] was to try and be as faithful as possible, to try and recreate the kind of viewing experience
that you would have got if you were Japanese seeing it in Japan."
Gaiman found the jokes impossible to translate. However, he had to make
up something because all the characters are reacting with laughter.
Gaiman has not seen the complete film, but has seen some video of the
Billy Crudup, Claire Danes, and Gillian Anderson scenes and remarked:
"You know, this thing's going to work."
I believe Neil Gaiman is sincere. He has done very fine work for DC Comics, namely the Sandman comic and other titles. He has supported
the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, making benefit appliances and such. I
really like the Miramax idea of showing the movie in a theater to
inspire greater appreciation for the work. No one can deny they have
gathered well-known actors and a highly-regarded writer to prepare their
American release. Many on the list may prefer subtitles, but what subtitled movie
has ever been a big success in the US? Some have been profitable on a
small scale in art house theaters. I think the ideal time for Mononoke
Hime is a Spring release with less competition from the big Summer
releases. Miramax will certainly seek considerable publicity. Perhaps
Mononoke will be #1 for a week or two. In any case, we can always go
back to the Japanese original if we are disappointed in the Miramax
outcome. Kinokuniya in SF and SJ have the VHS tape for $40. I have seen
the LD in several places for around $80.
Manga Max's first issue is a very good magazine. Frederik Schodt interviews Masamune Shirow. Helen McCarthy writes short pieces on
Miyazaki-san, Katsuhiro Otomo, Shoji Kawamori, Hideaki Anno, and Mamoru
Oshii. There is a report on Nausicaa.net and the Russian problem. As for
the copyright issue, I believe my summation and comments fall within
"fair use.""

The game is for the Sony PlayStation.
One Player.
Takes 1-3 blocks on your memory card.
Teen approved so 13+ due to animated violence
Put out by THQ.
So what is the game it's like? Well it's a third person view
(so the camera angle is slightly behind the vehicle) action game. For
those of you not familiar with the Manga then this game introduce you to the
Fuchikoma an all purpose spider looking tank which is what you pilot in
the game (sorry you don't get to play the Major but the Fuchikoma is a
blast to play besides you get to see her in the movie bits through out the
game isn't that enough?). When I say all purpose it is the Fuchikoma will
climb up most surfaces plus it will walk along the ceilings. Weapon
systems include Standard Balkin S-A riffles, T-1 lock on missiles, and type B
heavy grenade launcher.
This game plays fast and smooth. The different missions and
terrains each mission has keeps the game from getting boring. The
action is often very, very fast paced keeping you on your toes. Fortunately the end
bosses are hard but not impossible to beat. The game has a total of 12 mission
levels, and training missions so it will keep you busy for a while. I
also view this game as playable after you beat the game because you can
go back and play the missions that you
really like.
