TCCFA members have been attending the Chinese Language Exhibit at the Glendon Gallery. Thanks to the Gallery for a very informative exhibit! Chinese languages have existed in Canada since 1788 and are now spoken in every province and territory. Chinese is not a single language; it is many languages, and those spoken in Canada each have their own history. Over 1.4 million people speak Chinese languages in Canada!

The Toronto Canada-China Friendship Association was pleased to be able to offer a presentation by Dr. You-Zhi Tang. His topic was Landfill: Alternative & Proactive Strategies and Innovative Technologies for the Air, Land and Water both for Landfill and Land Use, and Some Examples of China's Practices and Initiatives. EMILY MO, HKETO DIRECTOR We thank Emily Mo, HKETO Director, for her wonderful presentation on Sunday, March 1. The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) serves as Hong Kong’s diplomatic representative in Canada. Ms. Mo is the Director of HKETO. Emily Mo spoke about the latest developments in Hong Kong, including the major national initiative that Hong Kong plays a role in, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and about the long running student demonstrations. 
BETHUNE MEMORIAL HOUSE Sunday, December 2, 2019 We thank Scott Davidson, Site Manager of Bethune Memorial House, for his wonderful presentation entitled 'Birthplace to Burial Site' which took place on Sunday December 1. We also thank everyone who attended despite the wintry weather! As site manager of Bethune Memorial House, Scott Davidson wears several hats: director/curator of a small museum, planner of new exhibits as the museum grows. He oversaw the design and construction of a new wing opened in 2012, and recently of a recreation of a First World War trench adjacent to the buildings. 
YAN LI: FAITH FEARS NO DISTANCE Sunday, November 10, 2019 Yan Li is the Coordinator of the Chinese program at the Department of Culture and Language Studies, and the Director of the Confucius Institute at Waterloo since 2007. She spoke about her recent book: Faith Fears No Distance: dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Norman Bethune’s Medical Team to China. We thank Yan Li for a very insightful presentation aas well as those who attended the event at the Ontario Institute of Education. 
SEAN CHEN: EATING THROUGH THE GARDEN OF CONTENTMENT Sunday, April 7, 2019 We thank Sean Chen for his very insightful presentation 'Eating through the Garden of Contentment', which took placeon Sunday, April 7 at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. Dr. Sean Chen is a bio-engineer with an interest in food and Chinese cuisine. This led him to an eighteenth-century Chinese cookbook Recipes from the Garden of Contentment. He taught himself to read classical Chinese and then he set about translating the 200-year-old book. Dr. Chen’s talk was on the story behind the translation, and what things one can learn about Chinese gastronomy and Chinese cuisine from the work. 
DR. CHEN SHEN, ROYAL ONTARIO MUSEUM Sunday, March 3, 2019 We thank Dr. Chen Shen for his wonderful presentation, 'Navigating Cross-cultural Collaborations: Cultural Exchange via Museum Exhibition between China and Canada'. which took place on Sunday, March 3, 2019, at OISE. We also thank everyone who attended and asked some very insightful questions. Be sure to visit the Royal Ontario Museum when you get the chance to visit their wonderful Chinese exhibits! 
ANNUAL JIAOZI DINNER Saturday, February 10, 2019 We thank everyone who came out and enjoyed our Annual Jiaozi Dinner to welcome the Year of the Pig. Guests who came early enjoyed making dumplings with our usual ingredients of pork, ginger and other spices. Refreshments included tea, soft drinks, spring water and Sunkist oranges for dessert. It was a very festive celebration with good food and better company. We hope everyone has a very prosperous and joyous Year of the Pig! 
LEO CHAN: A CULTURAL JOURNEY THROUGH TORONTO'S CHINATOWN Sunday, November 18, 2018 We thank everyone who came out to see Leo Chan, Professor Chef at George Brown and Humber Colleges, and his talk 'A Culinary Journey Through Toronto Chinatown'. He spoke about the art and culture of regional Chinese cuisine and how they are intricately linked with successive waves of immigration in the current Toronto Chinatown scene. The talk explored the ever-growing Chinese food community. It is a journey in search of lotus roots, the culinary roots sprouting from rich and ancient traditions to modern Chinese cuisine for the next generation of food lovers. 
ANNUAL FALL BANQUET Monday, October 15, 2018 On Monday, October 15, we held our eleventh Annual Banquet at Asian Legend, 900 Don Mills Road in Toronto. We always invite the Consulate to send representatives. which they always do. This year we received a note from the Consulate telling us that Han Tao himself, the new Consul-General, would attend our Banquet. We were deeply pleased and honoured by his acceptance and we thank all of the guests who attended. Mr. Han was born in Dalian in 1963. He has been with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1986, serving in Japan, USA, Grenada and Sri Lanka. He worked in the Chinese Embassy in Ottawa from 2015 to 2018, and arrived in Toronto in August, following the departure of HE Wei. 
DR. SHIU LOON KONG Sunday, July 29, 2018 The TCCFA thanks everyone who came to listen to Dr. Shiu Loon Kong and his presentation 'Canada’s Multiculturalism and China’s Confucianism'. This event took place on Sunday, July 29, 2018 at the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto. Dr. Shiu is a University of Toronto Professor Emeritus who received his PhD from the University of Ottawa. He designed the Canadian pavilion concept of Expo 67 with Marshall McLuhan and Harry Parker. With Trudeau, and others, he formulated the concept of Multiculturalism and citizenship education. He helped to engineer the diplomatic relations between China and America, and between China and South Korea, and is currently engaged in the Reunification dialogue of North and South Korea. 
PROFESSOR BOB ADAMSON Sunday, May 27, 2018 We were very fortunate to have Bob Adamson as our speaker on Sunday, May 27 with his presentation 'Barbarian as a Foreign Language: English in China'. He is an internationally acclaimed expert in second and third language teaching and has written more than fifty textbooks for primary and secondary schools. He was also part of the curriculum development team that produced the Junior English for China and Senior English for China textbook series, which are used by approximately 400 million students. Professor Adamson has served as a Consultant to the People's Education Press in the Ministry of Education, China, for more than 25 years. 
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AND DINNER Monday, April 23, 2018 We thank everyone who came out to our Annual General Meeting and Dinner on Monday, April 23. We returned to the Dim Sung King in Toronto where our guests were able to enjoy a wonderful 10-course meal which included Peking Duck. We congratulate the Board of Directors who were elected for the 2017-18 season and we especially congratulate Professor Michael Copeland on his re-election as TCCFA President. 
PROFESSOR HOWARD LIN Sunday, March 3, 2018 We thank Professor Howard Lin of Ted Rogers School of Management for a very insightful presentation on "Transnational Entrepreneurship as Agent for Innovation Collaboration between Canada and China." We also thank those who attended and joined in the discussion on how Canada and China can work more closely together to foster a mutually beneficial relationship in terms of trade, immigration and entrepeneurship. 
2018 ANNUAL JIAOZI PARTY Saturday, February 3, 2018 We celebrated the Year of the Dog by having our Annual Jiaozi Party at the Downsview United Church in Toronto. Guests were invited to participate in the making of the pork dumplings which facilitated much conversation between the participants. We thank everyone who came out to join our celebration and we also congratulate those who won the very impressive door prizes. We'll be sure to see you next year! 
PROFESSOR BERNIE FROLIC PRESENTS: 50 YEARS OF RELATIONS WITH CHINA: MYTHS AND REALITIES Sunday, November 12, 2017 We thank Professor Bernie Frolic for his wonderful presentation about diplomatic relations between Canada and China since their re-establishment almost 50 years ago in 1970. We thank everyone who came out for the talk and appreciate the insightful questions that made for a lively discussion! Bernie is Professor Emeritus at York University; he was a visiting professor of Canadian Studies at Harvard University. Bernie Frolic has been active in China studies for more than 50 years, mostly as an academic, but also as a diplomat and as the director of a training programme for Chinese official, in Beijing and Shanghai. 
CHANGING LEADERSHIP PATTERNS IN THE XI JINPING ERA Sunday, October 22, 2017 We thank everyone who attended Professor Victor Falkenheim's presentation: Changing Leadership Patterns in the Xi Jinping Era on Sunday, October 22, 2017 at Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), Rm 5150. It was a very interesting talk by Dr. Frankenheim about the role that Xi Jinping will play in the next five years as China's leader. This week, the nineteenth National Congress of the Communist Party of China began its week-long meeting in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Professor Victor C. Falkenheim discussed the processes that determine who-will-be-who in the PRC. Vic is Professor Emeritus of Political Science and East Asian Studies at the University of Toronto. 
ANNUAL FALL BANQUET Monday, September 25, 2017 Thanks to everyone who attended our Annual Fall Banquet on Monday, September 25 at Dim Sum King in downtown Toronto. We also thank our guests from the Chinese Consulate for celebrating the banquet with us! Our guests were treated to a wonder 10-course meal at Dim Sum KIng in downtown Toronto which included succulent Peking Duck. This event marked the 10th Anniversary of the Association and we again thank everyone who came out to mark this special occasion. 
Tuesday, May 2, 2017 Thanks to the TCCFA members who came to our Annual General Meeting and Dinner on May 2. It was a very festive event and we thank everyone for a great season. Congratulations to Michael Copeland, who will be returning as President, and to the new Board of Directors who will be planning an exciting 2017/18 calendar of events. We'll see you in the autumn at our Annual Banquet! 
MULTILINGUALISM ALONG THE SILK ROAD: CENTRAL ASIA AND NORTHWEST CHINA Sunday, April 2, 2017 Many thanks to Stephen Bahry for a very informative presentation about the languages and peoples along the huge construction project, One Belt, One Road, that China is completing in central Asia. One Belt, One Road is commonly called the new Silk Road. Stephen Bahry has lived and worked in the region and was able to provide many first-hand accounts about the people who live there. 
Sunday, February 26, 2017 We thank Professor Janet Landa for a lively discussion about her book: Economic Success of Chinese Merchants in Southeast Asia: Identity, Ethnic Cooperation and Conflict. The book is a collection of her publications/papers that incorporate ideas from Economics, from other Social Sciences, and from Evolutionary Biology to explain the success of Overseas Chinese merchants. Janet Tai Landa is Professor of Economics, Emerita, York University. Her primary research interests are in the law-and-economics of exchange institutions. Her more recent research interests are in the bioeconomic (economics-and-biology) analysis of human and non-human societies. She was the Founding Editor-in-Chief (1999-2009) of the Journal.of Bioeconomics, published by Springer. Professor Landa also specializes in the discipline of Public Choice (economics of politics), with an emphasis on the topics of choice of voting rules and rent-seeking theory. Janet has been invited to give lectures at numerous universities and research institutes around the world. She lives in Toronto and is fluent in Mandarin. 
Saturday, January 21, 2017 We thank everyone who came out our Annual Jiaozi Party to celebrate the upcoming Year of the Rooster at the Downsview United Church in Toronto. TCCFA members came out to help prepare the delicious pork dumplings and then enjoy the fruits of their labour. We also thank the members of the Chinese Consulate who came out and provided some very appreciated gifts.
