CHINESE NEW YEAR DINNER FEBRUARY 3, 2014

Although our membership is getting smaller, we nevertheless have lively and interesting dinners, this year at several different venues as well. Once again, we met at the TaiPan restaurant for a sumptuous banquet. After dinner, we were entertained by an impressive presentation from world travelers and mountaineers, Jana and Paul Cakl, of their recent trip down the Silk Road. We presented them with beautifully framed bird paper cuts in appreciation.

Kelly and Angela produced many lovely door prizes and New Year treats for all the participants. Many received gorgeous calendars and the Canada Post commemoration stamp for the year of the horse.

REMINDER - MEMBERSHIP FEES DUE

Please note membership dues are due on a calendar year basis. Please send membership renewals to Treasurer Ted Foster at 159 Oakmount Road SW, Calgary AB T2V 4X3 in the amount of $15 for members and $25 for families.

SHOU LA SHOU

China Heritage Tour for ShouLaShou families
Last year Morag and Joanna obtained details on trips to China for families with adopted children age 10+. Families would only pay air fare to China, Chinese hosts paying their 9-day tour costs. Unfortunately, we did not have sufficient response to send anyone, as most of our participant children were under age 10. We now have some interested families for the 2014 Heritage Tour. We will examine ways to encourage participation from Calgary families.

Summer 2014 SLS Summer Camp
We are considering the possibility of a summer camp in Calgary for the SLS children. Let Morag know if you are interested.

CONSULAR NEWS - We welcomed a new Consul General to Calgary
Sheila Foster, Morag MacLellan and Ted Foster attended a reception at the Chinese Cultural Centre on January 27th to welcome Consul General Wang Xinping to cover the Alberta and Saskatchewan area. CG Wang originally comes from NE China and graduated with a degree in literature, first working as a teacher, then from 1985 with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Previous assignments include the diplomatic corps in the Netherlands, Sweden, Ireland, Guyana, San Francisco, Beijing and Shanghai. We look forward to a happy relationship with the new consul General in his role here in Calgary.

We said a sad goodbye to Vice Consul Bruce Deng, who returned to Beijing in April to get married, and then on to his next posting in Georgia on the Black Sea. Good Luck Bruce in all your future endeavours. Vice Consul Deng was to have made a presentation on his Tibet trip in December, but has very kindly left his PowerPoint presentation for us to see at one of our future meetings.
