Full scholarships from the Art Students League, New York Studio School and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture paved the way to Brathwaite's education at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. Prior to graduating from Cooper Union in 1978 Brathwaite worked at his alma mater as Director and Fine Arts instructor for the Saturday Program in Art and Architecture.
Brathwaite trained and worked as an art therapist at the Groves Therapeutic and Child Development Center before moving into the field of educational administration and counseling at the East Harlem Talent Search College and Career Counseling Program. Brathwaite was formerly the Assistant of Director of Admissions at the Parsons School of Design before joining the admissions staff at Pratt Institute. After Pratt, he served as Recruitment Specialist at Montclair State College School of Fine and Performing Arts.
In 1989 he was appointed to be the first Associate Dean of the Admissions and Financial Aid, for the Graduate School of Figurative Art of the New York Academy of Art. Opportunity knocked once again as he advanced to the position of Coordinator of Graduate Studies at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (CUNY). In 1994 he joined the City College of New York, of the City University of New York (CUNY) as the Assistant Director of Graduate Admissions.
