  • Modeled in 1945, at age 17, for Quaker Puffed Wheat Sparkies cereal.
  • Winner of 1960 Tony Award for best supporting actor in a dramatic play for The Fighting Cock.
  • Onetime Emmy nominee (for 1963 episode of Arrest and Trial); onetime Golden Globe nominee (for 1963's Cleopatra, the glossy epic starring childhood costar Elizabeth Taylor).
  • Played three different chimps--Cornelius, Caesar, Galen--in original Planet of the Apes movies and 1974 TV series.
  • Published four books of his photography.
