LTTE Attacks Again: More Innocent Lives Lost
- “Whither Serendib?”

by Sama Duthiya

The news item traveled fast. “There has been another bomb attack.......it had been in a bus, at Maradana....they say it was near the Railway Station......” the kind of news item that is now becoming common in Sri Lanka - and much dreaded. One more bomb, more lives lost, so many injured,so many traumatized - all innocent victims - all thrown by fate, or by Karmain the path of those who pursue relentlessly a senseless war. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has struck again to harm those that are innocent, those that are no party to any battle, those who were just going about their lives, men, women and children - victims all. The elusive “cause” for which they are fighting is becoming less and less clear to Sri Lankans, Sinhalese and Tamils alike. Many are accepting the horror as a way of life, something that they have to live with, for years to come. Most have started to go about their lives after a few minutes of sadness for those innocent lives lost.Yet, for those who lose a loved one in one of these senseless attacks, for those who are injured and have to live through the trauma of anguish and pain - for them it can never be the same again. For them, there is suddenly a desire to go to battle, not to put on battle fatigues, but to fight peacefully, against an evil that causes the devastation of innocent lives. It is a battle that needs more recruits - because there is strength in numbers; more power in a peaceful appeal to the international community - to put an end to the terror that cripples a nation, described by ancient mariners, as Serendib - a joyous and wondrous discovery!
