A HANDBOOK ON DEALING WITH DEMONS

By. John L. Chopores

MAT 10:8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give. (KJV)

                Demons are spirits cf.

LUK 9:42 And as he was yet coming, the demon dashed him down, and tare [him] grievously. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. (ASV)

MAT 8:16 When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with {his} word, and healed all that were sick: (KJV)

There are different kinds of duties that evil spirits do!

ACT 16:16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: (KJV)

(Revelation 16:13-14 KJV)

(13) And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs {come} out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. (14) For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, {which} go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

1SA 28:7 Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at En-dor. (ASV)

1KI 22:22 And the Lord said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt persuade {him}, and prevail also: go forth, and do so. (KJV)

EPH 3:10 To the intent that now unto the  principalities and  powers in heavenly {places} might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, (KJV)

EPH 6:12 For we  wrestle not against flesh and blood, but  against principalities, against powers, against the [1]rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in [2] high {places}.

Some are more evil than others.

MAT 12:45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and  dwell there: and the last {state} of that man is worse than the first . Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation. (KJV)

Sometimes they tell the truth, sometimes not!

(Mark 5:7-8 KJV)

(7) And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, {thou} Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. (8) For he said unto him, Come out of the man, {thou} unclean spirit.

(1Kings 22:20-23 KJV)

(20) And the Lord said, Who shall persuade Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramothgilead? And one said on this manner, and another said on that manner. (21) And there came forth a spirit, and stood before the Lord, and said, I will persuade him. (22) And the Lord said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt persuade {him}, and prevail also: go forth, and do so. (23) Now therefore, behold, the Lord hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets, and the Lord hath spoken evil concerning thee.

(Judges 9:23-24 KJV)

(23) Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech: (24) That the cruelty {done} to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.

Sometimes God Himself, will send a evil spirit to non-Christians, to punish them for sin!

                A Christian cannot be demon-possessed!

1. A demon spirit is a fearful thing to have inside you!

2TI 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. (KJV)

Faith and fear cannot live together. cf.

ROM 1:12 That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me. (KJV)

ROM 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. (KJV)

ROM 14:23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because {he eateth} not of faith: for whatsoever {is} not of faith is sin. (KJV)

AMO 3:3 Can two walk together, except they be agreed? (KJV)

If a person continues to walk around with a demon inside, that person will be destroyed.! cf. PRO 13:20 He that walketh with wise {men} shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed. (KJV)

Also, the Spirit of God, sets us free! cf. ROM 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. (KJV)

2. God would not allow a demon to live in His Temple! The Holy Spirit would not live with a unholy, unclean and evil demon! If, a demon was to enter and defile the temple of God, God would destroy the demon!!

(1Corinthians 3:16-17 KJV)

(16) Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and {that} the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? (17) If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which {temple} ye are.

The Holy Spirit, will not have "fellowship" with demons! cf.

1CO 10:21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils. (KJV) The "Lord's table" has to do with the body of the Lord. And all Christians are part of that body! cf.

(Ephesians 1:22-23 KJV)

(22) And hath put all {things} under his feet, and gave him {to be} the head over all {things} to the church, (23) Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

EPH 3:6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel: (KJV)

(Ephesians 4:4-6 KJV)

(4) {There is} one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; (5) One Lord, one faith, one baptism, (6) One God and Father of all, who {is} above all, and through all, and in you all.

Demons, want to come into a body "free" of the Holy Spirit and godliness! The demon may come in, when, the human is at eaze, nad not seeking God. cf.Matthew 12:4-45  43  When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. 44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it  empty, swept, and  garnished. 45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

3. Nowhere in the New Testament, does Jesus ever cast a demon out of one of the disciples! Nor, does St. Paul.  In the only three verses, in the writings of Paul, in which his fellow Christians are said to be sick, Paul does not say that they needed to have any demons cast out! cf.Phil 2:26 (KJV)  For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick.

Phil 2:27 (KJV)  For indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.

2 Tim 4:20 (KJV)  Erastus abode at Corinth: but Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick.

Paul was always willing, in the book of Acts, to cast out demons, when it was called for! cf. Acts 16:16  And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:

Acts 16:17  The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which show unto us the way of salvation.

Acts 16:18  And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

4. In the "prayer of faith" mentioned in James 5:14-16, the elders are not told to cast out a demon, first! cf.

 (James 5:14-16 KJV)

(14) Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: (15) And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. (16) Confess {your} faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

And the "prayer of faith" mentioned here, is for sick christians!cf."Is any sick among you?"

5. Rev. 9:4, says that the evil spirits, coming out of the pit, could not harm the people with the seal of God on them! Christians are the ones with the seal of God on them! cf.2 Tim 2:19  Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this  seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

Rev 9:4  And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.

Christians are sealed (as long, as they remain Christians), so that evil spirits cannot take domination in the Christian' life! cf.

Rev 9:4  And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.

Rev 9:5  And to them it was given that they should not  kill them, but that they should be [2] tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.

cf.Song 8:6  Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.

Isa 8:16  Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.

2 Tim 2:19  Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

6. A person with a demon in control:  cannot be a friend of God. And Christians are friends of God! cf. 1 Sam 28:16  Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy? James 4:4  Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

And Christians are friends of God! Cf. John 11:11  These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. John 15:13 you. 13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.  James 2:23  And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.Eph 2:13  But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

7. A demon spirit inside a person, will not give that person, a "sound mind" Cf. Mat 17:15  Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is a  lunatic, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.  You will notice, that, the person with the demon, does not use "sound judgment"!

But, we have been given, a Spirit of "sound judgment"! cf. 2TI 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a  sound mind. (KJV)

8. God gives light to His people, and an evil spirit, would not want to live in a person who has the light of God in them! cf.John 3:20  For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. And where the Holy Spirit, is, is light! cf.Acts 26:18  To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. 2 Cor 4:4  In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

2 Cor 4:5  For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake.

2 Cor 4:6  For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Only After a Christian falls away from the Faith, he/she can be demon possessed!

(1Samuel 16:14-15 KJV)

(14) But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord  troubled him. (15) And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

                It would seem to me, that this evil spirit, caused Saul much fear!cf. 1 Sam 28:15  And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.1 Sam 28:20  Then Saul fell straightway all along on the earth, and was sore afraid, because of the words of Samuel: and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the night.  Where as the Holy Spirit, is our comforter. cf. John 14:16  And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

John 14:17  Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 2 Tim 1:7  For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Sometimes, godly music, can give some temporary relief to a person with an evil spirit.

1SA 16:23 And it came to pass, when the {evil} spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him. (KJV)

How does a person become demon possessed?

1. By not having control over his/her spirit. cf.

PRO 25:28 He that {hath} no rule over his own spirit {is like} a city {that is} broken down, {and} without walls. (KJV)

1CO 14:32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. (KJV)

2 Timothy 1:7 hands.  For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a   sound mind.

2. Mind on wrong things. cf.

COL 3:2  Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. (KJV)

MAT 5:8 Blessed {are} the pure in heart: for they shall see God. (KJV)

MAT 6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. (KJV)

3. By not keeping his/her body in the will of God. cf.

1CO 9:27 But I  keep under my body, and bring {it} into  subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. (KJV)

That is, "I continually keep my body under." This is another way of saying, "I always bring myself into the will of God."

4. Not filling life with the things of God. cf.

MAT 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. (KJV)

(Matthew 12:43-45 KJV)

(43) When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. (44) Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth {it}  empty, swept, and [2] garnished. (45) Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last {state} of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

5. Sin(s) not taken care of.

Sin is the door by which a evil spirit usually enters cf.1 Sam.16:14&15;28:15;Judges 9:23,24; 16:2,20;Prov.14:14;Lu 11:24-26(see Gspd).

(1Samuel 16:14-15 KJV)

(14) But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him. (15) And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

PRO 14:14 The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man {shall be satisfied} from himself. (KJV)

6. The worship of false gods. cf.1CO 10:20 But {I say}, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to  devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have  fellowship with devils. (KJV)

(Deuteronomy 32:17-20 KJV)

(17) They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new {gods that} came newly up, whom your fathers feared not. (18) Of the rock {that} begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee. (19) And when the Lord saw {it}, he abhorred {them}, because of the provoking of his sons, and of his daughters. (20) And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end {shall be}: for they {are} a very froward generation, children in whom {is} no faith.

7. Not having his/her will, in line with the will of God! cf. 1 John 5:14  And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

1 John 2:17  And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

1 John 4:4  Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

8. Not having faith in the true God! cf. Deu 32:20  And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faith. Mat 9:29  Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. Gal 6:7  Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. Heb 11:6  But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

                Symptoms of Demon Possession;

   (1) The one under demon-power is an involuntary victim. (The willing soul is know as a medium.)

MAT 17:15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. (KJV)

MAT 17:18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. (KJV)

That is not to say, that sin did not open the door. But, only that the demon will make the person possessed do things that the person does not want to do! I do not think that the "son" in Matt. 17:15 wanted to fall into fire. [It should be noticed, that the person who is "demon-possesion", would never have become this way if, he/she had received Christ as Lord and Savior, and remained in "the Faith"!].

(2) One of the chief characteristics of demonomania is a distinct "other personality" within. ( This is different to demon-influence, for in this men follow their own wills, and retain their own personality.) cf.Mark 5:7-10 7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. 8 For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. 9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many. 10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.

Luke 8:29. 29 (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man....

MAT 8:16 When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with {his} word, and healed all that were sick: (KJV)
