What is the American Trakehner Dressage Futurity?

The ATA dressage futurity is open to horses breeding to the Futurity Stallions as published by the ATA in the "Stallion Service Sealed Bid Futurity." This can be accomplished by submitting the successful bid to the Futurity that is held each year in November by the ATA(minimum bid is 50% of the advertisied breeding fee as published in the Futurity booklet, OR by breeding to the stallion and making the required payments to the ATA. The mare owner must be a member of the ATA in the 5 years the foal is growing and must register the foal with the ATA by 2 years of age in order for the nomination to be valid. If the horse is sold the nomination transfers to the new owner who must also be a member or join the ATA. If the mare does not produce a "live foal" the nomination carries forward to next year." The futurity is held in the 5th year of the of the offspring's life. The competition is at the USDF training level in USDF recognized shows following the eligiblity for the "Horse of the Year" awards. The horse does not have to win the award but be the highest placing eligble horse in the award catagory(in Canada it is in Basic I and the horse must compete in 4 different shows under 4 different judges. These scores are incorporated with the US scores). The highest placing 5 horses win money. The award money: the following is the split of the total as paid to all of the parties:

Place 1ST:..% to colt owner 25%,..% to stalion owner/donor 5%,..% to mare owner/breeder 5%

Place 2ND:..% to colt owner 16%,..% to stalion owner/donor 4%,..% to mare owner/breeder 4%

Place 3RD:..% to colt owner 12%,..% to stalion owner/donor 3%,..% to mare owner/breeder 3%

Place 4TH:..% to colt owner 8%,..% to stalion owner/donor 2%,..% to mare owner/breeder 2%

Place 5TH:..% to colt owner 4%,..% to stalion owner/donor 1%,..% to mare owner/breeder 1%

Why is the futurity limited to dressage?

In order to wait long enough for a horse to be competing at the recognized jumping and eventing levels, the horses will have to be a minmum of 6 to 8 years of age. This is too long to wait for a futurity and the ATA does not want to pressure people into jumping a horse before it is ready. Since all of the horses must be schooled on the flat before being jumped, it is logical that the horse be shown in flat classes. The United States Dressage Federation uses a percentage scoring system that allows horses, no matter where shown, to compete against each other without having to travel to big shows or centralized locations.
