Boreham Wood were founded in 1948 following the amalgamation of Boreham Wood Rovers and Royal Retournez. The club progressed through the Mid-Herts League into the Parthenon League and then into the Spartan League in 1957. In 1966 they finished runners up to Hampton and moved into the Athenian League. In 1968/69 they won Division Three and then the following season they finished runners up in Division Two thus finding themselves in the top Division. They spent three seasons in Division One before winning it in 1973/74. The next season the club applied and were accepted into the Isthmian League. They entered into Division Two, winning it in 1977 by 16 points and moving up to the First Division. In 1980/81the club finished in 21st position in the top flight but avoided relegation due to Enfield and Dagenham’s decision to join the Football Conference. Unfortunately they were relegated the following season for the only time in their history finishing 9 points adrift of the safety zone. Little was achieved in the next 12 seasons except fourth place in 1987/88 and 1991/92. In 1993, Boreham Wood appointed Bob Makin as first team manager and he was named Isthmian League manager of the season 1994/95 as the club won the First Division championship by 22 points from Worthing. In 1995/96 the Club were still in contention for the Championship until the last day of the season but finished third following wins by Hayes and Enfield. 10th place was achieved the next season but the club won the Isthmian League Cup. In 1994/95 and 1995/96 they reached the Full Members Cup final only to be beaten on both occasions on penalties to Staines Town and Sutton United respectively. Last term the club finished runners up to Kingstonian and reached the second round of the FA Cup for the second season running.

During the nineties the club have upgraded their Broughinge Road ground every season and the Football Conference grading was obtained in 1996.

On Friday 10th July 1998 the club celebrated their fiftieth anniversary by playing a full Arsenal first team. The match drew a record attendance of 2,832 and Arsenal's manager Arsene Wenger, officially opened the clubs new stand. Boreham Wood's main ambition is to progress into the Football Conference and compete at the highest level of Non-League football.
