Welcome to my first attempt at writing a unit study. I hope you find it informative and useful. Feel free to print it out.

This unit is based on a home project of ours, so you may adjust it to your own situation.

MISSION ISPOSSIBLE:

THE WOULD-BE ROOM

Your mission, should you decide to accept, will be to figure out what it will take to convert the back deck into a bedroom.

The Problem: You will need to determine how large, in square feet, the back deck is. You will need to measure and make notes of your measurements. You will also need to determine how tall the walls will be and what the slope of the roof is.

Tools: Pencil, paper, measuring tapes (at least 25'), a calculator, and graph paper

Method: Take careful measurements. Use your calculator to figure out square footage.

Miscellaneous: You will also need to know the measurements of plywood, 2 x 4 lumber, paneling, and roofing. You will need to determine approximately how much lumber will be necessary to complete the project. You will also need to figure in the nails, wiring, insulation, floor covering, and siding. You will need to figure the approximate time it may take to construct it.

Bible: Look up and write down passages in the Bible that talk about building. For example, building the tabernacle in the wilderness, Solomon's Temple, the parable of the man who started to build a tower but ran out of money, the parable of the man who tore down his barns to build new ones, the rebuilding of the wall around Jerusalem, etc.

  1. What must be done before we build?
  2. How long did it take to build the tabernacle in the wilderness?
  3. How long did it take to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem?
  4. How long did it take to build Solomon's Temple?
  5. What do those 3 projects have in common?
  6. How were they paid for?
  7. Who was involved in each of them?
  8. What special skills were needed?
  9. What materials were needed?
  10. How do those projects differ from the one in the parable of the tower?
  11. How do they differ from the one in the parable of the man who tore down his barns?
  12. What do those parables have in common?
  13. What lesson can we learn from those parables?

 Additional Activities and Projects

  1. Write the story of a tree from seedling to finished lumber.
  2. Research the lumber industry in America. Write a report telling how it impacts our economy and our environment. Tell what measures are being taken to ensure that there will be forests in the future. Tell what parts of the country are most favorably impacted by the logging industry.
  3. Research the types of trees used in making lumber and tell why they are used.
  4. In your Bible, find the types of wood used in Old Testament time and tell if they are still used today. Also, find the locations where Old Testament persons could find the wood. Write 4 verses that mention these types of wood.
  5. Make a list of other products that come from trees.
  6. Interview someone you know who is or has been involved in the logging industry to learn how it is done and where the trees go.
  7. Learn what conditions are needed for growing good trees. (Oral report)
  8. Learn what a tree farm is and if there are any in your area. (Oral report)
  9. Learn what contributions trees make to our environment. Why are they important? (Written report)
  10. Make a list of industries that depend on trees.
  11. Learn the benefits and the harms of logging. Tell the different types of logging and their impact on the land.
  12. 38% of this country is wilderness. 28 % of Africa is wilderness. Using these numbers, find out how many square miles those are. Tell why you think there is such a difference in the amount of wilderness in the two countries. (Written report. Give as many reasons as you can)
  13. Make a leaf collection.
  14. Observe and list the types of wildlife and plants that exist near you.
  15. Conservation of trees involves good stewardship. Find 3 verses in your Bible which instruct us on good stewardship.
