FORD 289/302/5.0/351W V-8 into '79-'85 MAZDA RX-7
Parts, Prices & Infomation

Brad Bergholdt's California smog legal Ford 5.0/AOD powered '83 RX-7

The engine/transmission are from a low mile '89 Lincoln MK-7, which has the proper oil pan and factory exhaust headers that fit perfectly. Total investment was 5 or 6 Fridays of work, and a tad over $1000. dollars. The car is CA smog legal, and gets better fuel mileage than it did when it was rotary powered. Brad recently sent us this note: "I've put almost 4000 miles on the car with no trouble whatsover. It gets 19MPG in town and 26MPG on the road. Zero-60 times are under 6 seconds, would be a lot better with improved rear tires.-Brad Bergholdt".
By the way, Brad is the Automotive Technology Instructor at Evergreen Valley College in San Jose. For a write-up on the installation details of Brad's conversion, including wiring, CLICK HERE.

...1st gen. Basic Kit for 289-302-351W Fords...
This new addition allows bolt-in installation of the lite-weight 5.0, requires NO crossmember modification, yet still fits under the hood !!! The secret is simply un-bolting the stock front crossmember (6 bolts), then REVERSING it 180 degrees and re-installing it. This causes the center portion that interferes with the oil pan to swing to the rear instead of the front, allowing a stock double sump late Mustang 5.0 pan to straddle both the crossmember AND steering linkage!!! A short oil filter (or 90 degree adapter) is required, but the low placement buys you a lot of room under the hood for air cleaners and such. Lots of room for headers too. With this kit, the EFI manifold from the Mustang 5.0 will clear the stock 1st gen RX-7 hood.
(NOTE: The GSL-SE models use a crossmember that requires modification, as the engine mounts for it's fuel injected 13B engine are about 3/4" farther ahead than those for the 12A (carbureted) engines. When the crossmember is reversed, the additional 3/4" is in the rearward direction, so interferance with the steering linkage can be expected. The easiest solution, if you are building Ford V-8 powered GSL-SE, is to simply use a reversed crossmember from a 12A powered RX-7 ).

...351W oil pan...
If you would like to install a 351W in your 2nd gen, you will need an oil pan from a 351W equipped Crown Victoria (the police car Crown Vics came w/ the 351W).

NEWS...
...Higher Rear Gears Avail. for 1st gen RX-7s...

It has come to our attention that the 3.636 gears from a '79-'82 RWD 626 will fit the '79-'85 RX-7 rear. The 3.308 ring & pinion from an '82-'84 Diesel powered B-2000 / Ford Courier will fit as well (Thanks Randy). For '79-'83 RX-7s, it is a direct replacement. '84-'85 RX-7s use a larger dia. axle, but the side gears can be swapped, allowing use of the higher geared 3rd member in the '84-'85 RX-7s as well.

frequently asked questions....

...What engines can I use?
Most any small block 260-289-302-351W Ford will work. The carbureted models make for an easier conversion, but the 5.0 EFI engines will fit under the hood too.

...Do I have to use an electric fan?
No. A 15" mechanical fan will fit and is recommended for use with the Ford conversions. If you want to go electric, the 2 spd fan from a '94-'97 T-Bird draws 31 amps on high, and is the most powerful automotive sized electric fan that we know of.

...Can I use a manual transmission?
Sure. The T-5 from a Mustang application is fairly easy install. The shifter is going to be a bit farther back than the stock 1st gen RX-7 though, and will require modification to the stick to come up thru the stock plastic and boot.
The pull style clutch linkage design used by the Mustangs can be converted for use with the RX-7's hydraulic design by using a "pull style" hydraulic slave cylinder, such as Wilwood's PN# 260-1333. They use a single threaded stud as an anchor, requiring only a hole in a simple angle iron bracket for mounting.

...How fast will my car be?
Quickness of the car will be greatly improved, as the V-8 torque is about double that of the rotary engine. Overall top speed depends on the transmission selection and the RPM range of the engine. Expect a stock V-8 (with good tires) to produce 13-14 sec. 1/4 mi times.
