I have always loved Altheas. I don't know why particularly. It could be the soft colors or that they bloom over most of the summer. This project was started to provide a working list for a planned collection that I wished to establish: My "homework" if you will. As I started my research, I quickly became aware that there were few people working in this area and that little had been published. I began with lists from the plant encyclopedias, a search on the internet and the plant sourcebooks. Then I wrote letters. Lots of letters, both by email and regular mail. Things began to turn up and the list grew. I'm still looking for more...

I have expanded this page to include those species known to hybridize with H. syriacus. Each list is arranged alphabetical by cultivar name. Because of the confusion that exists, I have attempted to retain all sources. Where differing descriptions exist, all are included. Currently I am limited to printing using the Roman alphabet only. I have retained the native languages in my notes and will include them in some future edition of this list. I am very interested in any additional information or corrections. Beth Matney
