PETE HAMILTON was known as a gentleman on and off the track. Pete won the NASCAR National Sportsman Championship in 1967 after finishing 8th in 1966, which was later to become the Bucsh Grand National Division. |

Pete was the first Northerner to find success in the Winston Cup Division, paving the way for others from the North to follow. |

Pete won the Winston Cup Rookie of the year in 1968, then went on to win the Daytona 500 in 1970. Pete then became the first driver to win both Talledega 500 mile races in the same year (1970), until Dale Earnhardt duplicated the feat in 1999. |

All the Northeast drivers who have raced in the South since owe a debt of gratitude to Pete for showing the Northerners belonged there. |
