POKOK SENA, Sept 12 --An ocean of people turned up to hear Anwar Ibrahim speak here last night. Estimates ranged from "definitely more than 50,000" to "looks like close to 10,000."

It was by far the biggest show of support for Anwar since he was summarily dismissed from the Cabinet on Sept. 2. Many people were trapped in their cars, which jammed the roads leading to this small town. A group of supporters said they must have walked a few miles from where their cars were parked to get close enough to hear the speech. One reporter drove back along one jungle track to see how long the line of parked vehicles was. He counted seven kilometres.

Earlier in his home town of Bukit Mertajam, Anwar addressed a crowd of about 10,000.

Aides said he would speak tonight at Ayer Keroh, Melaka.
