   ELLEN,born 1850 in CANADA,Was the oldest of DANIAL and MARYS children.DANIAL had seven children by his first Marriage and also seven by his last..

   ELLEN married William DEVAULL, born 1857 in Canada.They had one adopted son CHARLES DEVAULL. ELLEN died--9-6-1927 in HOUSTON TEXAS.Actually Ellen died some time befor that date. Thehe letter in which it mentioned her death was so dated..
Ellen and her husband were still living in CAYUGA North Dakota in 1921,she eventualy moved to Houston Texas as did her brother AUSTIN CRYAN..

   AUSTIN was probably the first of his family to settle in North Dakota,near GENESEO..

Eventually all would settle in the general area. He is listed to have come to the US from CANADA in 1870.

His wife`s maiden name was BARRY... They had several children,which were listed in the 1900 census.All (AUSTIN and his brothers) were homesteaders and farmers,most where in the Vicinity of GENESEO and CAYUGA there was a school called the CRYAN school.

   Around 1915 AUSTIN and his family moved to HOUSTON TEXAS,He died there in the 1930`s and his wife in the 40`s.

His youngest son JOHN preceded them in death.He had belonged to the 111th Marine Regiment.. A military funeral was held.
One of AUSTIN`S daughters,FLORENCE MARGARET CRYAN married ALBERT EUGEGE MAACK--IN 1920.

MY grand father JAMES CRYAN and his brother MICHAEL spent the winter with AUSTIN and his family--1919--1920..

   JAMES was my grandfather,I was 12 yrs old when he died,so I remember him very well..He was usually in good spirits and he made sure my sister and I had a Shamrock pinned on,on St. Patrick`s day.

He also liked to sing old Irish songs,and play checkers and Euchre..

   In a letter of intent to become a Citizen filed in Richland Co. N.Dak.he stated that he emigrated to the U.S. and landed in Waddington New York in 1870.
This letter was filed on 7-8-1882 in Richland county..

At some point after this he went back to Canada,and is listed in the 1891 census in Kingston Ont. Can.AS follows...

   Hattie Pearl Eustatia Cryan. was born the next year in 6--12--1892.Either in Kingston or Madoc Junction..

She was married to Clayton Goodsell.They had three children..

Married Myrtle Jones--One child -two grandchildren. Date of marriage 11-30-1914--He died 11-25-1952...

   The wife and mother was .Mary Jane Bennett Born-- 8-16-1861 Madoc Juntion--died 10-30-1940.....


   Mary`s father was Edward Bennett B, Abt.1838--
Her Mother was Eustatia Burgess B.12-25-1842

   I remember one of the sons wrote a letter to my grandfather,but I don`t know the details. Pretty sure it was George Armour -----

Below is the pictures of the James Cryan farm, taken in about 1926-27..This is the site he homesteaded on in the eighteen ninties-- Present day Breker farm near Lake Tewaukon..

The next record I have of James Cryan is when he again filed a letter of intent in Cass County North Dakota on 4-5-1893--

He filed for citizen papers on 12-10-1899 in Sargent county North Dakota..He had two witnesses,William F. Scott and Fred George...

In the mid nineteen thirties, North Dakota did some research on the early settlers. The researchers were part of the WPA program. I obtained records from North Dakota State University library, of the following information James Cryan gave to them in 1938.

����James married my grandmother Sarah Keating in 1896 at Geneseo N.Dak.She came to the Dakota`s from Wisconsin in a covered Wagon with her folk,her dad`s name was James Keating,

A sister Mary(she married a Hickey)and a half brother William Keating who was the town marshall in Havana at one time.

He had a daughter Midi who married Art Miller Sr.There children were Evelyn, Gladys,Arthur and Phillis


He (James Cryan) recieved his homestead papers on 5-11-1901,he homesteaded on the lake traverse lands by lake tewaukan,,He and his familey lived there until 1928, and then he lost his farm during the depression...



James move to Havana with his family and lived there until his death in 1943..His wife Sarah had preceded him in death... 7-24-1938..


They had four children

Loren Danial Cryan born7-24-1898--died 7-24-1986


Vernon Cryan born 7-23-1901----Died April 1952


Lucille born 2-2-1904-- Died March 10 2000


She married Tony Haremza,They had one son WAYNE HAREMZA, born 6-5-1928,



She is buried in Perham Minn. St. Henry Catholic Cemetery...

Wayne still lives in Perham,,
Wayne married Dorothy Weiss on July 10th 1951,they have five children Jean,Connie,Mary Kay,Mike and John...





Ida(my mother) born 1-22-1907


She married Orlando Staehnke,They had two children.Lila born 6-16-1929 and Lyle born 9-21-1930..Lila has two children Lori and Jamie Hatton,also two grandchildren Jeremy and Jessi Hatton..

Lori is married to Boyce Smith........
Ida died 12-17-1986 and Orly died 10-2-1988.........

I (lyle) was married to Betty Nyquist,she died 12-7-1980...

   I know very little about LUCY,She was born in Canada,at some point in time she came to NORTH DAKOTA where the rest of her family lived,she is buried in Geneseo,date of death was 4-26-1891..She would have been only 36 years old..

   THOMAS CRYAN was a barber, He had a shop in Havana N.Dak.The Cryan family own the hotel there at one time,they sold it to John Lynch in 1895.
Thomas own quite a bit of land,some in Canada,and also about a section near Havana.

He filed for citizenship in Forman N.Dak. on 5-29-1890.He had documents to say that he had filed for intent in Eureka county, State of Nevada

Thomas died 8-4-1917,hes buried In Geneseo N.Dak.

I found the record of his death in Lidgerwood N.Dak.At the Catholic church,it stated his mothers maiden name as MORAN..



Michael born 10-20-1860




   Mike also was a farmer,he lived in Kingston township,Sargent County.
In the 1900 census it lists Mike as head of household,also living with him was his brother Joseph and mother Mary.

I believe I mentioned before that Mike and my grandfather JAMES wintered in Texas with another brother (Austin) Who lived in Houston.
Mike left a pretty sizable estate.and I got quite a bit of info from his
Probate papers
..



Joseph born Jan.-1863





   JOSEPH was the youngest child of Danial and Mary CRYAN.He filed his letter of intent in Forman N.Dak. on 4-14-1892 and became a citizen on 11-2-1900.

He mariied ANNA STIBAL.They had four children Margaret,Eleanor,Charles and Thomas.


Both parents are buried in Cayuga N.Dak. Catholic cemetery. Joseph.Died in 1932 and Anna in 1947.
