Acting has been Michael's ambition since he was 12. He earned his degree in theater arts at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. He then came to New York for more technical training at the Circle in the Square Theater. Before AMC, Michael appeared in the stage productions of "Absurd Person Singular" and "Enemies" as well as in the feature film "Baby, It's You". Michael then took over the role of Tad Martin in 1983 and his performance as Tad has won him two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Younger Leading Actor in a Drama Series.

In late 1988 MEK's Tad started interacting with Dixie Cooney (Cady McClain). They have been working off and on together for the past ten years.

Michael has also appeared in the feature film "Date With An Angel" and "Hexed", and in plays such as "Wrong Turn at Lungfish", "Cakewalk" and "Run for Your Wife".
