This Chronologue represents nearly 20 years of RODEN research. The biggest obstacle has been the many spelling variations of this surname. RAUGHTEN, RAUGHTON, RAUTEN, RAUTON, RAWDEN, RAWDON, RAWTEN, RAWTON, RATTEN, RHODEN, RHODEN, ROADEN, RODEN, RODDEN, ROTEN, ROTON, ROTTEN, ROTTON, ROUGHTEN, ROUGHTON, ROUTEN, ROUTON, ROWDEN, ROWTEN, ROWTON, WRATON, WRATTON, WRODEN, WROTEN, WROUGHTEN, and WROUGHTON are all spellings which are used today by descendants of old Ezekias/Isaias - and I have no doubt omitted a few.

Regardless of spelling, all are indexed as RODEN. I did that for my own convenience in handling all this. I chose that spelling because it is what my line of the family used. If your line used another, please believe that no slight was intended.

The footnotes often represent conversations I was having with myself. I trust you will forgive me this eccentricity and my occasional inclusion of collateral lines that may be mine alone.

I hope you will find something helpful here. I welcome your comments, corrections and especially your additions. I will be the first to admit that, at times, I have made notes and forgotten to list my sources. I can only assure you that I had one or more for every item listed here. In most cases the source is in italics after the source.

From Tennessee Cousins, by Worth S. Ray: pg. 522. "Early Settlers of White County, TN" . The ROTAN or WROTTAN family were the descendants of Capt. Wm. WROTEN from Barnwell Dist., SC who settled in Sparta at an early date. He had a daughter who married Dr. THROCKMORTON in Sparta and became the father of Gov. James W. THROCKMORTON of Texas. He was also the father of Edward ROTAN (WROTEN) born in Sparta in 1844 and moved to Texas where he made a successful business at Waco.

[Ray's wife was a WROTEN from Barnwell and he will abide no other spelling unless forced to. He thinks she is a descendant of Isaac who was in Perquimans, NC in late 1600s. He has no more proof of that than we have of our lineage...maybe less. Nevertheless, he likes that line and he is sticking to it.]

The Blount County, AL Historical Society hand-copied the RODENs from their deed index for me, but only one contains a date.

---------------------------------------------

NOTE: This by no means claims to be a compilation of all the RODENs in the United States. I have deliberately stopped entering Virginia and Maryland records after about 1820. We know that our line was gone by then and it just was getting unmanageable. I do have many records from those states as well as Deleware and Pennsylvania. If anyone needs that information, I will be glad to do a look-up for you.

I have a whole new respect for indices since I tried to index this. As most of you know by know, the name which my line spells as RODEN has been spelled 30-odd other ways. In the body of this text I have left the spelling exactly as I found it, but all variations are indexed as RODEN, so just look for your given names. The allied lines and others are indexed by surname only.

Women, for the most part are entered by their married names - the exceptions being when I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt what the maiden name was. In those cases, I have entered the maiden name, also.

I have no doubt that I have missed some RODENs due to the many spelling variations and that I have included some folks here who were not actually RODENs. I hope that you will accept my mistakes and omissions as honest error. This is 20 years worth of work.

I sincerely hope it helps all of you.
