Updated March 18,2000
I could find no reference to Lydia receiving a medal as stated above. However the followig article was recently sent to me from the original newspaper clipping.

One would think I would have noticed the Date of Lydia's death before now and wonder why it took since 1887 to get around to rewarding Lydia.
OOPS! I am only human.
Tennyson In Ashes -July 23 1926 Friday Fire almost totally destroyed the business section of Tennyson, 10 miles east of Boonville, shortly after noon Monday, with a loss estimated at $60,000, with only a Small part covered by insurance. The conflagration started from an unknown cause in the Josiah McClary produce house and spread rapidly over the Entire business section of the town, destroying thirteen Frame business houses and six residences with their contents. Only three buildings, those of J C Polk, the Tennyson National Bank and W.J. Wright & Son remained standing after the fire had been brought under control. But for the heroism of Mrs Iva Spradley, telephone operator, the entire town would have been wiped out and several residents might have lost their lives, fireman said. Mrs Spradley stayed at her post spreading the alarm among her townspeople until one side of the building in which the exchange is located had been burned away. When the heat became so intense that she could no longer remain at the switchboard, she seized a portable telephone set and ran from the building. She immediately reestablished communication with the outside world by connecting the telephone to a long distance wire two blocks away. It was she who summoned fireman from Evansville and Huntingburg. In answer to calls for help an Evansville fire truck arrived at 2:29 o'clock and the Huntingburg department five minutes later. Lines of hose from wells and ponds soon played on the fire and the town was saved. Losses Itemized The buildings burned were: Scott Hesson -Grocery loss $ 7,000 Odd Fellows Building occupied by Hoskinson & Sparks Grocery loss $5,000 Andrew Shoptaugh residence loss $700 Rufus McClary -General Store loss $ 8,000 Livery Stable owned by Norman Hoskinson loss $1,000 Josiah McClary -Produce house loss $1,000 Randall Eastham -Barber Shop loss $800 Wm Kimbrough -Grocery with Post Office loss $3,500 Galen White -Jewlery Store loss $1,000 Lester Brown-residence loss $400 Frank Phillips-Hardware Store loss $6,000 Wm Kimbrough residence loss $3,500 Wm Broshears -Produce House loss $500 Wm Hunt -Bakery loss $4,000 Charles Spradley-Restaurant loss $2,000 Walter Hull -Barber Shop loss $400 Tobe Hoskins-dwelling loss $1,000 Mrs Mary Perigo-dwelling loss $1,000 S L Hesson -residence loss $3,000

I found the next artical while searching old newspapers at the library.

Boonville Enquirer July 30,1926 Mrs Spradley Heroine Of The Late Tennison Fire (Special Correspondence In Evansville Sunday Courier and Journal) Tennyson,July 24 The heroism of Mrs Iva Spradley, local telephone opperator, in risking her life to save the town during the disastrous fire of several days ago, aside from being a story that will go down into the town"s history, may become also the turning point in the life of the heroine. A widow since the accidental death of her husband, Carl Spradley has supported her two children, Lorene, 15., and Norman Carl Spradley, 13, and kept them in school. Today Mrs Spradley was presented with a tidy purse of money gathered as a token of appreciation by telephone operators at Bonville. Only a day or two ago, school trustees of Skelton township offered her a position as teacher in a rural school. Both of these augur easier times ahead for Mrs Spradley. She has been a telephone operator since her husbands death. "I'm going to use the purse for an educational fund for my children and I certainly want to express my thanks to the Boonville operators for their gift." she said today. Mrs Spradley is proud of her two children. Her daughter is a high school senior and her son is entering his third year in high school this fall. Mrs Spradley's fighting blood is inherited from a proud ancestry, her family tree reveals. Her mother was a Hardin from Hancock county, Kentucky, and her father a Lindsey from Butler county, Kentucky. Judge Caleb J Lindsey of the Warrick county circuit court is her brother. Sherriff Earl Spradley of Warrick county is her brother-in-law. Mrs Spradley's action in summoning the fire departments of Evansville and Huntingburg during the recent fire, was not the only distinguished service in her career. Two years ago, when the Tennyson school caught fire, she summoned a bucket brigade that put out the fire, with the result that very little damage was done, when there might easily have been a loss of life, as well as destruction of the building.
