On 27 January the Cairo Opera House
will form the festive surroundings for the draw for the men's indoor handball world
championships, which, as you know, is to take place in different Egyptian towns from 1 to
15 June. At 7.30 p.m. (local time) the president of the IHF Commission of Organizing and
Competition, Mr Peter Mühlematter (SUI), will carry out the allocation of the teams to
the four preliminary round groups for the title matches on the Nile.
He'll be assisted by Joachim Deckarm, the former
top German handball player, who has been invited by the Egyptian Federation to draw the
lots. The draw programme will be rounded off by artistic acts and the presentation of the
official WC hymn.
The draw will be carried out in six performance
groups of four teams each. The 24 participating teams belong to the six performance groups
as follows:

The draw is effected by first drawing a country from one pot and after that drawing its corresponding group from the second pot.
1st Step: Draw of
performance row 1 with
Russia - Sweden - Spain - Germany
into groups A - B - C - D
2nd Step: Draw of
performance row 2 with
Yugoslavia - Tunisia - Hungary - Saudi Arabia
into groups A - B - C - D
3rd Step: Draw of
performance row 4 with
Norway - Cuba - Korea - Algeria
into groups A - B - C - D
4th Step: Draw of
performance row 5 with
FYROM - Nigeria - China - Argentina
into groups A - B - C - D
5th Step: Draw of
performance row 6 with
Australia - Kuwait - Morocco - Brazil
into groups A - B - C - D
In line with point. 2.1.5., paragraph 4, of the Regulations for IHF Competitions it must be paid attention to the fact that when drawing the teams from performance row 6 the team from one continent is not drawn into the same preliminary round group as the team of the same continent from performance row 5. For example, Morocco must not be drawn into the same preliminary round group as Nigeria, or Brazil not into Argentina’s group and Kuwait not into China's.
6th Step: Draw of
performance row 3 - as organiser Egypt has
the prerogative to assign itself to a group of its
choice.
Then
France - Croatia - Denmark
will be drawn into the remaining three groups.
