The conflict between James 2:24 and Romans 3:28
Romans 3:20
...by the works of the Law
no flesh will be justified;
for through the Law
comes the knowledge of sin.
Romans 3:28
For we maintain that
a man is justified by Faith apart
from works of the Law.
James 2:24
You see that a man is justified by works,
and not by faith alone.
Understand distinctions:
Law of works (Romans 3:19-20)
Law of Faith (Romans 3:27-28)
The first law offers no justification in that it is a law that
focuses on what WE do versus what HE does through us
-- but, if we are under the Law of Faith, we are justified
by faith. The distinction is that the first law demands that
we do according to its will, according to its doctrines or
rules, whereas the second Law demands that we do according
to His Will; further, the first law's demands are based on
an unfeeling, uncaring non-entity, whereas the second law's
demands are based on the Love of The Father.
The distinction of works/Faith justification:
One can not be justified by works if they are not
results of Faith, therefore faith, not works, justifies --
However, Faith, if it is true, produces works which, being
based on Faith, do justify. The distinction is what the works
are based on: the law of works, or the Law of Faith.
It seems like a strange distinction, but it needn't
be difficult to understand. We are saved by Faith, not works.
We are justified by works, but only if they are the result of
the law of Faith and not the law of works.
Works done to prove something -- those works done
because we have to "obey" the law, or those done to receive
gain -- are works of little or no value (and no value at all as
regards Faith-based Salvation) -- much as a cup that has
nothing in it is of little value to a thirsting man. Such
works are arduous tasks, jobs, things done because "they must
be done."
But works done because of true Faith are not even
truly works at all, but joys; Faith produces such joy that
doing works is a blessing, something to be looked forward to
with excited anticipation, things done in love and with a
smile (while faithless works produce, at best, frowns).
Works done for the sake of the law of works are done
for the sake of proof, and to gain favor (either of other
people, or The Lord Himself) which is contrary to The Lord's
Words which state that Faith, not works Save.
Works done for the Law of Faith are done out of love
and not to prove something, nor to gain anything (and are
done with the forknowledge that the gain has already been
made by the very fact of our Salvation).
I hope this better clarifies the issue.
God Bless!!
Yours in Jesus Christ,
Andrew D. Festa
