THE HIGHWIRE DAZE INTERVIEWS

Updated: 05/21/01

Lost Prophets are from the UK and play a unique sort of aggro-rock that is aggressive, yet filled with other types of influences. As each band member is into different styles of music, a kaliedoscope of sounds are collected, with the results featured on The Fake Sound Of Progress, their awesome debut on the Visible Noise label. We recently e-mail one of the Lost Prophet guys. Here is what was discovered in their Gospel of Heavy Metal.

HD: Introduce yourself and tell me what you do in Lost Prophets and how long the band has been together.

Mike: I'm Mike, I'm one of the guitarist in the band. The band has been together for about 3 1/2 years now.

HD: Where is the band from and what is the music scene like there?

Mike: We are from Cardiff Wales, which is in the UK. Cardiff's music scene is growing and has some pretty cool underground bands. The UK on a whole is definitely getting better, with rock music becoming more popular. There's loads of cool bands emerging and the turnouts to shows are becoming really good.

HD: What is meant by the album title The Fake Sound of Progress?

Mike: There's so many bands that claim that their sounds is so "fresh" and "different" to everything else around today. Whereas in reality, its the same as what most other bands are doing. They claim they "we're taking heavy music and giving it a melodic edge" or "we're combining rap with rock" thinking that they are breaking new ground whereas its the same as everything else, so its the "fake sound of progress"

HD: What is it that makes the music of Lost Prophets different from other metal/alternative bands?

Mike: Haha -- its difficult to answer this given the answer to the above question. We just try and incorporate all our influences together to make as a unique sound as possible. Everyone in the band listens to different forms of alternative music and I think that's what makes our sound that little bit different.

HD: Where did you get the ideas for some of the lyrics on the album?

Mike: Sorry can't really answer that as Ian writes all the lyrics.

HD: What song did you shoot the video for and what was the filming like?

Mike: We shot the video for "shinobivsdragoninja." It was cool, but hell at the same time. Playing the same song to a backing track like 50 times in one day isn't that fun, but the people that came down to be in the audience gave us the inspiration and drive to carry on. Those kids were nuts!

HD: Describe a live Lost Prophets show to those of us in the US who have yet to see you play.

Mike: Six guys on stage going off. Just loads of energy, and us trying to have fun. We're all about having fun when we play live, and usually one of us falls on our ass.

HD: Any chance ot Lost Prophets doing any shows here in the States soon?

Mike: Hopefully the album should be out there within the next couple of months then we'll be out there doing a sh*tload of shows to promote it.

HD: The Queen Of England invites Lost Prophets to play 2 songs for a Royal Command Performance. What two songs would you play for the Queen and why?

Mike: Thats tough, probably "Handsome Life Of Swing," hopefully that'll kill her off, if not then we'll try and finish it up with "Kobrakai." Or perhaps do a cover of The Sex Pistol's classic "God Save The Queen" and see what she made of that.

HD: Elton John invites your vocalist to record a song with him on his next Duets album. (Well, Eminem is doing it anyways). Would you do it, what song would you sing with Eltie and why?

Mike: Would it be one of Elton's songs?? If so, I think it would have to be "I'm Still Standing" cos that song just f*cking rocks, or maybe "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting".

HD: Someone at a show offers you 50 pounds if you performs "Oops I Did It Again" by Britney Spears in the set that night. What do you do?

Mike: Nah, Travis has already done that. We'd have to rock out an N'sync tune, maybe "Bye Bye Bye"

HD: So who's better anyway, Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera.

Mike: I'd have to say Britney. Christina did that awful duet with Ricky Martin, what was that sh*t all about????

HD: By the way, what's it like being from the country that practically invented the boy band?

Mike: Great -- we get to go see Boyzone and Westlife in concert all the time -- beats going to see Metallica I can tell ya.

HD: So does Lost Prophets have any groupies at your shows?

Mike: Nah, we're all good boys, keep ourselves to ourselves.

HD: Why should someone run out right now and buy the new Lost Prophets album?

Mike: Simple, it kicks ass. 16 tracks mixing Rock with post Hardcore with emo with breakbeat, and its great to sing along to in the car, haha.

HD: What are the future plans for the band?

Mike: Just to get our album out all over the world and get out there and play to as many people as we possibly can.

HD: Any final comments?

Mike: Thanks for the interview, its cool that people overseas are getting into our sh*t. Just come check us out live, check the album when it hits the stores later this year and just keep listening to rock music.
