Buddha (Siddharta)
by, Lorena Herrera
Buddha's real name is Siddharta Gautama, he
was born in the sixth century in Lumbini. His father's name was Suddhona
and his mother was Maya. His father had order that he live in total seclusion,
and he married at the age of 16 with Yasodhara. One day he ventured
into the world and confronted the inevitable suffering of life. So
at age 29 he left his kingdom and new born son, to think of some way to
stop the universal suffering. He wanted to lead an ascetic life and
for 6 years he spent time with various religious teachers to find different
methods of meditating. One day he discovered that the physical austerities
were not the means to achieve liberation, and one day he sat under
the bodhi tree and meditated until dawn. That day he purified his
mind of all defilements and attained enlightenment at the age of 35.
Thus he earned the title Buddha, or the "Enlightened one". For the
rest of his 80 years he preached the dharma in an effort to help other
sentient beings reach enlightenment.
