Working in a collaboration with the English, World Cultures, and Language Teachers,
students will present a speech to inform peers about the language, literature,
and culture of a Latin American Country (Mexico and South.)

Components:

• Work with a partner
• 8-10 minute presentation
• Visual support (Powerpoint, Web Page, or Posters)
• charts, graphs, maps, alphabet or words, collage/images, artifacts
• Each partner speaks for ½ the time

• You may proceed in any order through your presentation.
• Each teacher will cover a portion of the project’s goals in class, but the majority of the responsibility will lie on you and your partner.
• You will present a “Focus Talk” to your World Cultures and Language classes prior to the final presentation.

Speeches will be assessed using the IB Rubrics for Language A and Humanities.

Presentations will take place in your English class during the week of December 13-17, 1999.
 
 

A Sample Outline for your Speech

I.  Introduction

• tell a story (here’s where your myth could come in)
• give us some startling statistics (tell us something you’ve learned from your research in World Cultures)
• sing a song or have a dialogue in the native language of the country
• feed us some native foods or share with us some cultural artifacts

II.  The Body of Your Speech

• use your research notes to guide your coverage of the topic
• use a visual to demonstrate your points or to provide visual focus for your audience (i.e., pictures, charts, graphs)
• use sound clips to demonstrate linguistic differences

III.  The Conclusion

• if possible, bring it back to your introduction
• remember:  this is your audience’s final perception of you—make it good
