TRIANGULAR CRESTED SHIELD

The triangular shaped shields varied in size. Some were actually quite small as they allowed for better movement and split-second reaction to an incoming attack. This was found to be beneficial to some knights rather than wielding a larger, more cumbersome shield. However, the size of the shield was strictly a matter of personal preference among the knights.
The example pictured above may have had ties to the Crusades being that the cross is present and within the center of the shield lies a different family crest or emblem. Not all shields that contained a cross were representative of having seen combat in the Crusades. The cross was a common symbol that appeared on many shields throughout the Medieval Ages.
