How We Got Our Bikes

The buying of our first bike, a 1981 Honda Silverwing began in January 1999. The police were chasing a stolen car; the car lost control going around a corner, and sideswiped our parked Toyota Tercel. We had just finished paying off this car in December of the previous year, so needless to say, it was a big shock. The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia wrote off the car, and they gave us far less than it was worth (of course).

We searched for a week to find a replacement vehicle, only to discover that the only things we could get for the settlement we received, were pieces of sh*t. Then, I found an ad in the Buy & Sell for a 1981 Honda Silverwing. The ad read: ’81 Honda Silverwing, fairing, touring pack, good cond. $1595.00. Well, I have always wanted a Silverwing since the ‘80’s, so I hopped in the rental car, took a look at it, and settled with the owner for $1295.00, and took it home. I spent the next week cleaning it up, took it to the Honda dealer for new rear brakes, and generally got it ready for the riding season.

Then, while surfing the Internet for Honda Silverwing sites, I came across someone selling a 1982 Silverwing Interstate with Hondaline fairing and bags, removable seat/trunk. I wrote to the owner, and offered him a trade for a laptop and digital camera (wife freaked when she found out). The owner wrote back, saying that he was interested, and the trade was made. I couriered the stuff out to him, he took the bike to get safety certified, and will be shipping the bike out on March 15th.

I can’t wait until it arrives! (on March 22nd) My wife and I plan on going on a lot of trips this summer…work permitting. First trip will be to Vancouver Island to visit family.
