CHARLES M. "DEE" MORTON, Sr.

Charles was born March 30, 1862, Maury Co., TN and died Oct. 13, 1940, Montana. He married Mary Hannah Newhan Aug. 24, 1891.

From MONTANA HISTORICAL SOCIETY:
"Charles M. Morton first went to Colorado in 1880, where he spent about 7 years. In 1887 they pushed north in the Montana Wilderness to Flathead Valley, Montana.
"C.M. is famous for being the first white man to settle in this remote area of Northwestern Montana in the Flathead Valley. He was instrumental in opening the valley to other settlers. Here he became a miner and later "a very successful farmer." They lived in Holt, Montana.
"The Flathead valley area was home to the Flathead Indians, called so because of their peculiar custom of using stones to flatten the top of their heads. Their official tribe name was the Solish tribe, The areas surrounding were also occupied by Chinook, Choctaw and Muskegon tribes. An assembly of these and other tribes were in 1876, at the Battle of the Big Horn, site of the Custer massacre.
"Montana history documents that C. M. and his wife were noted for their fine hospitality and anyone who passed their way was never turned away.
As a rancher, he spent the rest of his days nestled in a beautiful valley with the river running through. His place was located near where the old town of Holt once stood.
"In the early days this was one of the 1st settlements that had a store, saloon, post office and blacksmith shop. Since the river was narrow, a terry was eventually put in that carried most of the travelers when the area was being scaled. Later, steamboats were the main means of travel and at one time more than 15 good sized boats were on the lake. It is also the resting place of the Helen A, sunken ship that was over 100 feet long. The hull now sits just below the bridge where part of it was still visible not too many years ago."
John David Measley II and wife, Pat add this about Charles;
"John Marshall Mortons brother (CM?) was famous for contributing largely to driving the Indians out of Montana and opening the territory for settlers. Montana history books document this."
"From an old news clipping of a bi-centennial reprinting of the Wichita Falls Daily Times, "C. M. Morton, from Montana, spent time in Wichita Falls visiting his brother John Marshall Morton."
