Death of F. G. Odeneal

Drowned while bathing in Brazos River near Cleburne, TX

The following acount of the drowning of Prof. F. G. Odeneal is taken from the Cleburne Morning Review.

Prof. F. G. Odeneal former, voice instructor at Clebarro Colege, but lately, instructor of a large class in music and voice at Parker, was drowned in the Brazos River at the mouth of Ham's Creek on yesterday morning. When the news reached this city that Prof. Odeneal had lost his life in the Brazos, and that his body was not found, Mr. J. H. Ewing and R. H. Deeringsecured some dynamite at a local hardware store and proceeded to Klondike with a view of causing the body to rise but, the body had been recovered before they arrived. They brought the remains to this city arriving about 7:30 last night. The remains had been left in the water and were very well preserved. There was agash on his face, caused by barbed wire used for dragging for the remains. The father-in-law of the dead man arrived last night and will accompany the remains to Sherman this morning, where internment is to take place. Mrs. Odeneal was prostrated on the receipt of the sad news received from Klondike. On his return to this city from Klondike, Mr. J. H. Ewing was seen. He said: "On arriving at the river we ascertained that Prof. Odeneal and a class of thirty or forty students had pitched camp for a few days outing. They arrived on Wednesday morning and were having a good time. Swimming was part of the amusement. Those in the water had been testing their swimming ability and it is thought that Prof. Odeneal was exhausted at the time he sank. He was a good ways off and one of the party swam close to him but was afraid to dive down and bring him up because of the fear that both would drown. Prof. Odeneal sank in about twelve feet of water and members of the party began immediately to dive and drag for his body. When he waved his hand, before sinking the last time, most of the boys thought he was playing a prank, as he was a good swimmer. My son, Elbert, who was there on an outing with his wife and several folks, stated that the bathers had on their clothes. Doubtless this additional weight, after swimming so much up and down the river, contributed to the loss of life. He was a good ways off from the nearest man, when he went down the last time.

"The remains were recovered at 1:30 p. m. The drowning of Prof. Odeneal threw a damper over the party. His loss of life in the river was a great shock to all members of the party. He was well liked by all who had the pleasure of his aquaintance. He was about twenty-eight or thirty years of age.

The remains were embalmed at the R. H. Deering undertaking establishment and were viewed by a Review man last night. It was not known last night whether the remains would be shipped to Sherman by way of the interurban or the Santa Fe, but some stated that it was likely, that they would go northward on the first interurban express car.

The friends of Prof. Odeneal in this city will extend sympathy to the bereaved relatives because of his untimely end.

Lives in Alabama

Ed Gray of the Deering undertaking establishment, stated last night that the mother of Prof. Odeneal lived in Alabama and because of advanced age would not come to Texas to attend the funeral, which is to be held in Sherman.
