The real news about the 2003 Queen's race is the huge total vote count: the highest on record since the Humboldt Fall Festival Queen was elected by voting 79 years ago. The 292,291,874 total eclipses any previous year and more than doubles the end count of 2002
The top five ladies have changed rankings over the seven weeks of balloting. Kelly Moyer moved to the top after week three and retained that lead for the remaining final three weeks. The only change in the last week's count belonged to Bridget Huppert, who moved up from 4th to 3rd place, changing places with Julie Vrtiska. The remaining six places were static in the final week.
Last year the vote count was down and the drought was blamed. The drought continued into this year, but a new high record was set. For what reasons 2003 had such a sharp rise is anybody's guess.
The good news is the Humboldt Chamber of Commerce is happy as well as the local merchants. The Humboldt Standard wants to compliment the Queen Election Committee for its promptness in counting the vote and notifying the public each Tuesday.
