This is a remembrance of what I saw and went through between 1982 and 1985. It is as accurate as I can remember it.
Also note that I was never deeply involved in "the business." I never signed anyone under me, I never sold any product; indeed I was a "distributor" only one year. Most of this is remembrances of observations of friends.
I make no distinction between Amway and Quixtar except to note there is no longer (As Of January 1, 2003) an Amway direct sales organization in The United States and Canada, having been supplanted in these two countries by the Quixtar direct sales organization. The products are the same, the compensation plans are the same, the rules and regulations are similar enough to insure continuity from Amway to Quixtar, and the Motivational Organizations operate in Quixtar in pretty much the same way they operated (and still operate outside of the U.S. and Canada) in the days of Amway.
I also make no distinction between Quixtar/Amway the "business opportunity" and Quixtar/Amway the Social Reality. I see no reason to, as there is little difference between the two. The structure of Multi-Level Marketing forces those who wish to succeed in it to develop systems similar to the motivational organizations that infest Quixtar/Amway. Besides, the Quixtar/Amway/Alticor Corporation has worked long and hard to protect the shadow pyramids that have fed her even as they have fed off her.
