Tropical Johnny V at Huntington Gardens in Los Angeles...
Welcome to my home on the crazy web... I live in the heart of Texas and love
the hot weather this part of the country provides. It's a great location for water sports, outdoor
activities and year round adventure. One of the things this great climate allows is the growing of hardy palm trees!
Which happens to be a favorite hobby of mine. I started loving palms as young teenager while living in Phoenix Arizona.
Phoenix was filled with tons of date and mexican fan palms. Back then I didn't know that much about palms and
truly thought there were only a couple of different types of palms. As it turns out there are over 2600 varieties of
palms. Many of which can only be grown in tropical locations yet there are a number of species that can tolerate
sub-tropical and temperate conditions and some that are down right cold hardy. This is where my interests lie with palms, I'm
one of many collectors attempting to expand the natural endimic area in which palms will grow. I'm currently growing 35
different varieties here in San Antonio. Many of these will prove to be hardy enough to not only survive
but also flourish. Many palms in the washingtonia, phoenix, butia and sabal families freely germinate (& naturalize) in our climate.
