AMEMAIT

The Devourer

AMEMAIT

(variations - Amam, Ammit, Amemet)

This beast is more commonly known as "The Devourer" in ancient Egyptian mortuary lore. Part lioness, part hippopotamus and part crocodile which is frequently seated on a small pylon, but the most common depiction of Amemait is in the pictures of the Judgement scene from the 'Book of the Dead' - (the walls of Der el Medineh also show much detail).

She is also called 'She who destroys the wicked', it was her function to devour the hearts of the dead who did not past the test of Judgement and thus destroys totally the soul of the dead.

Unfortunately very little more is known beyond this point.
